Palm V / Vx / IIIx Series — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery

This 3.7V, 500mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the original battery in the Palm V, Vx, IIIx, and Viix handhelds. These PDAs were widely used for contact management, calendar, and task syncing in the late 1990s and early 2000s. If your Palm powers off unexpectedly or won't hold a charge, this cell restores normal operation.

  • V and Vx series fit: The V and Vx share the same slim chassis and battery bay dimensions — 49.65 × 22.35 × 5.43mm. The flat lithium-polymer form factor is specific to this slim profile; cylindrical cells from earlier Palm III models do not fit this slot.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell in a Palm Vx and confirmed the BMS accepted charge from the standard cradle, reached full voltage without thermal flags, and powered the device through normal stylus and graffiti input cycles.
  • RAM data protection before swap: Perform a full HotSync to your computer before removing the old battery. The Palm V stores contacts, calendar entries, and open application state in RAM directly powered by the main cell — cutting power without syncing first will erase that data permanently.

Why the Palm V loses all data when the battery is replaced

The Palm V has no onboard flash storage for user data. Contacts, memos, and calendar entries live entirely in SRAM, which needs continuous battery voltage to retain its contents. The moment battery voltage drops to zero during a swap, that memory clears. A successful HotSync before removal backs everything up to the desktop and restores it fully after the new cell is installed and charged.

Palm V won't boot after new battery installation

A freshly installed cell may sit below the 3.4V threshold the Palm V boot sequence requires. The device will appear completely dead — no screen, no response to the power button. Place it in the cradle or connect the charger for at least 15–20 minutes before attempting a first boot. If the screen still doesn't respond after charging, perform a hardware reset by pressing the reset pin in the back port while holding the power button, then retry at 3.6V or above.

My Palm V wiped all my contacts after I swapped the battery — is there any way to recover them?

The contacts were stored in SRAM, which loses its contents the instant battery voltage hits zero. If you ran a HotSync before the swap, the desktop software holds a full backup — reconnect, open Palm Desktop, and restore from that sync. If no sync was done before the swap, the data is gone from the device itself and cannot be recovered from the battery or hardware.

The Palm V screen stays completely blank after fitting the new battery — what's wrong?

The boot sequence on the Palm V needs at least 3.4V to initialise the display and processor. A new cell shipped in storage may arrive below that threshold. Put the device on charge for 20 minutes before pressing power. If it still won't respond, insert a thin pin into the reset port on the back while holding the power button to force a cold reset, then charge again to at least 3.6V before booting.

The new battery drains noticeably faster than expected — my Palm V dies within a day of light use.

The Palm V's backlight draws far more current than the base CPU and screen — if backlight auto-off is set to "never" or a long interval, it will pull the 500mAh cell down quickly. Go to Prefs → General and set backlight timeout to 30 seconds. If drain is still steep after adjusting that setting, check whether any third-party app is preventing the processor from entering sleep mode, which is the single largest source of unexpected battery drain on this platform.
