This 3.7V, 500mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the original battery in the IBM C3 pocket PC. The C3 is a PDA-class handheld used for scheduling, contacts, and notes. When the original cell degrades, this replacement restores normal operation without sourcing new hardware.

  • IBM C3 compatibility: The C3 uses a single-cell Li-Polymer pack at 3.7V nominal. The connector pinout and physical footprint — 49.65 × 22.35 × 5.43mm — match the original cell directly. The onboard BMS handles charge termination at 4.2V and low-voltage cutoff near 3.0V.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the C3 platform. The BMS accepted charge from the cradle without fault flags, and the device held full operating state through the complete cycle.
  • Pre-swap data sync: The C3 stores open files and application state in RAM powered directly by the main battery. Before removing the old cell, perform a full sync to the host computer. Any unsaved data in RAM is lost the moment battery voltage drops to zero.

Why the IBM C3 won't boot after a fresh battery is installed

A new Li-Polymer cell ships at storage charge — typically 3.6V to 3.7V, not full charge. The C3 boot sequence draws a short current spike that can trip the BMS low-voltage protection if the cell is near its lower threshold. The device may appear dead even with a new battery installed. Place it in the charging cradle for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on.

The C3 radio and backlight pull significantly more current than standby mode — far beyond what the capacity gauge accounts for in idle estimates. If wireless sync is active during heavy use, voltage sag under load can cause the device to read a false "full" state. Disable wireless sync when not actively transferring data. Check the charge indicator only after the device has been at rest for several minutes to get an accurate voltage reading.

The C3 stores contacts, calendar data, and open application state in SRAM, which is powered directly by the main battery. The moment the old cell was removed, that RAM lost power and the data was cleared. The new battery did not cause this — the power gap during the swap did. Going forward, perform a full ActiveSync or cradle sync to the host computer before pulling the battery.

My IBM C3 charges in the cradle but the wireless sync keeps dropping partway through — is the battery faulty?

The C3 radio is voltage-sensitive and draws a higher current load than the rest of the device. If the battery is not at full charge, voltage sag under radio load can cause the sync connection to drop mid-transfer. This is not a faulty cell — it is a charge-level issue. Charge the device fully to 4.2V before starting a wireless sync session.

The IBM C3 screen comes on for a second after I install the new battery, then goes black and won't respond — what's wrong?

This is a BMS low-voltage trip during the boot current spike. New Li-Polymer cells ship at storage charge, around 3.6V, which can sit close to the BMS cutoff threshold under load. The device starts to boot, draws current, the BMS trips, and the screen cuts out. Put the C3 in the charging cradle for 30 minutes first, then attempt to power on.
