Fits Panasonic HDC-MDH2GK camcorder; replaces OEM part VW-VBD78.
Delivers 7.4V, 6600mAh output for extended HD video recording sessions without midshoot power loss.
Connector type matches OEM slot orientation; locking tab seats flush against camera body housing.
We bench-tested this cell in HDC-MDH2GK body; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion without authentication delay.
On first use, run one full charge cycle via the HDC-MDH2GK body charger before heavy recording — Panasonic camera BMS requires this cycle to map battery-remaining display accurately across the discharge curve.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Panasonic HDC-MDH2GK / AJ-PX270 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (VW-VBD78)

This is a 7.4V, 6600mAh (48.84Wh) Li-ion cell built to the VW-VBD78 spec. It fits the Panasonic HDC-MDH2GK, HC-MDH2, AJ-PX298MC, AJ-PX270, and four additional models in the same platform family. The connector pinout and BMS handshake match the OEM battery exactly.

  • Platform fit — MDH2 and AJ-PX series: These camcorders share the same 7.4V battery bay, multi-pin communication connector, and BMS handshake protocol. One cell format covers the full lineup without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell on the HDC-MDH2GK body. The BMS negotiated correctly on first insertion, charge acceptance came in at full rated capacity, and the protection circuit tripped cleanly at the low-voltage threshold without dropping mid-cycle.
  • First-use charge cycle on the AJ-PX series: The AJ-PX270 and AJ-PX298MC use an internal BMS that maps the battery-remaining display against a learned discharge curve. Run one full charge-to-discharge cycle inside the camera body before production work — this lets the camera calibrate remaining capacity to the new cell's actual curve.

Battery percentage readout locking at 100% then dropping suddenly on the HDC-MDH2GK

The MDH2GK reads remaining capacity by tracking voltage against a stored discharge curve from the previous cell. A new cell with a flatter discharge profile sits above the expected voltage threshold for longer, so the indicator holds at 100% until voltage finally drops into the mapped range. This is not a fault — it is the camera's fuel gauge mis-mapping a new curve. Run one complete charge and discharge cycle in the camera body. After that cycle, the indicator will track the actual cell curve and report remaining charge accurately.

Camera body showing a dead-battery icon immediately after inserting a fully charged replacement

This happens when the BMS on the replacement cell has not yet completed its first handshake with the camera's power management circuit. The MDH2GK checks cell communication on insertion — if no acknowledgment returns within the timeout window, it displays a dead-cell icon and refuses to power on. Remove the battery, insert it again firmly until the contacts seat, then power on. If the icon persists, place the cell in an external VW-VBD78-compatible charger, charge to full, and reinsert — the charge cycle initialises the BMS and clears the handshake block. Cell voltage at this point should read 8.3–8.4V on a multimeter before reinsertion.

Frequently Asked Questions

The HDC-MDH2GK battery percentage jumps from 80% straight to 20% — is the new cell faulty?

The cell is not faulty. The MDH2GK maps remaining charge against a voltage-threshold curve stored from its previous battery. A fresh VW-VBD78 cell holds a flatter voltage plateau than a worn original, so the indicator skips large percentage blocks when voltage finally crosses a stored threshold. Run one full charge and discharge cycle inside the camera body — not in an external charger — and the camera will remap the thresholds to the new cell's actual discharge curve. After that cycle, the readout will track smoothly.

The replacement VW-VBD78 cell drains noticeably faster on the AJ-PX270 than it did on the HDC-MDH2GK — why?

The AJ-PX270 runs a higher sustained draw than the HDC-MDH2GK because it adds broadcast-grade codec processing, the ND filter motor, and continuous genlock circuitry — all active simultaneously during recording. The 6600mAh rated capacity does not change, but the AJ-PX270's combined system draw pulls the cell down faster than a consumer camcorder body does. This is normal for the platform. If the cell depletes unusually fast even without recording, check that the wireless module and streaming output are not both active at idle — both draw continuous power from the battery rail even when the camera is in standby.

After sitting unused for three weeks, the replacement VW-VBD78 won't power the AJ-PX298MC — the camera shows nothing at all on insertion.

Li-ion cells in storage self-discharge slowly, and if the VW-VBD78 cell dropped below approximately 6.0V during storage, the BMS will have entered deep-discharge lockout to protect the cells from damage. The camera sees a cell reporting below its minimum voltage and refuses to start. Place the battery in an external VW-VBD78-compatible charger — not the camera body — and allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes. The external charger applies a low-current recovery charge that brings the cell back above the BMS re-enable threshold. Once the charger shows a normal charge rate, transfer the battery to the camera body and power on.
