Fits Panasonic HDC-MDH2GK camcorder; replaces OEM part numbers VW-VBD58, VW-VBD29, VW-VBD58E-K, VW-VBD58PPK.
7.4V, 4400mAh lithium-ion cell delivers sustained power for extended HD video recording sessions on this professional camcorder.
Battery slides into the side slot with a single-tab lock; connector seats flush with firm contact verification required before closing door.
We bench-tested this cell in the HDC-MDH2GK body for voltage stability across discharge — BMS accepted the new pack without authentication delay on power-up.
On first use, run a full charge cycle inside the camera body rather than an external charger — the Panasonic BMS requires internal voltage mapping to display accurate battery remaining percentage during recording.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Panasonic HDC-MDH2GK / AJ-PX270 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (VW-VBD58)

This is a 7.4V, 4400mAh Li-ion replacement battery for Panasonic professional camcorders including the HDC-MDH2GK, HC-MDH2, AJ-PX298MC, and AJ-PX270. It replaces OEM part numbers VW-VBD58, VW-VBD29, VW-VBD58E-K, and VW-VBD58PPK. Physical dimensions are 70.25 x 41.33 x 51.20mm — verify against your existing cell before ordering.

  • HDC-MDH2GK and AJ-PX series compatibility: These camcorders share a common 7.4V battery rail and the same physical locking connector, which is why a single cell covers both the consumer HDC line and the AJ-PX broadcast models. The BMS handshake is voltage-based, not firmware-encrypted on these platforms.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the HDC-MDH2GK body. The BMS held charge termination correctly at full voltage, and the remaining-battery indicator tracked steadily across the discharge curve without erratic jumps.
  • First-cycle conditioning on Panasonic camcorder bodies: Run the first charge entirely through the camera body or Panasonic OEM charger, not a generic multi-chemistry charger. Some Panasonic BMS implementations map the battery-remaining display to a discharge profile that only calibrates during the first supervised charge cycle inside the system.

Why the AJ-PX270 reports a lower charge level than the HDC-MDH2GK on the same cell

The AJ-PX270 uses a more granular battery-remaining algorithm tied to its broadcast-grade power management system. It samples cell voltage under the heavier draw of its AVC-Ultra codec and XLR phantom power circuit, so reported percentage reflects real-time load voltage rather than resting voltage. The HDC-MDH2GK runs a lighter processor load and samples less aggressively. A cell that reads 80% on the HDC body may show 70% on the AJ-PX under active recording — the physical capacity is identical, only the reporting method differs.

Battery percentage jumping erratically on the camcorder display

This happens when the BMS indicator mapping hasn't been calibrated to the new cell's discharge curve. The original OEM cell trains the camera's gauge over dozens of cycles; a new replacement cell starts without that history. Run one complete charge-to-full, then record until the camera shuts off on low battery — this gives the BMS one full reference discharge curve. After that single cycle, percentage readout typically stabilises. If jumping continues past three cycles, check that cell resting voltage is at or above 7.4V before charging.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Panasonic HDC-MDH2GK shows a "no battery" or incompatible battery warning with the new cell installed — what's happening?

The HDC-MDH2GK performs a voltage handshake when a new cell is inserted cold. If the replacement cell has been sitting at storage voltage (around 3.7V per cell, or roughly 7.4V total), the camera's BMS sometimes rejects it on the first read. Insert the battery and charge it fully via the OEM charger or camera body before attempting to record. One complete charge cycle from inside the system clears the rejection flag in most cases.

The battery percentage on my AJ-PX270 drops suddenly from around 40% to near zero and the camera shuts off — is the cell faulty?

This is a voltage-sag issue under the AJ-PX270's high codec-and-XLR draw, not a faulty cell. At the lower end of the discharge curve, internal resistance rises and load voltage dips sharply — the camera's low-voltage cutoff triggers before the gauge catches up. It isn't losing capacity; the BMS is protecting the cell from going below the safe floor. After a full recharge, perform one complete discharge cycle under normal recording load so the gauge recalibrates its cutoff threshold to this cell's actual curve.

The camcorder body gets noticeably warm during long recording sessions and the battery drains faster than expected — is this a battery problem?

The heat is coming from the camera, not the battery. On the HDC-MDH2GK and AJ-PX298MC, sustained 1080p or AVC-Ultra recording combines sensor, processor, and image stabilisation current draw — this is considerably higher than the spec draw used to calculate rated capacity. The cell is delivering correctly; the combined system load is simply heavier under continuous recording than under intermittent use. To slow drain, disable optical image stabilisation when the camera is on a tripod and reduce LCD brightness — both cut draw without affecting recording quality.
