Fits Panasonic NV-A1 camcorder; replaces VBS20E, HHR-V211, HHR-V212, VW-VBS10E, VW-VBS20, and related OEM part numbers.
4.8V, 2400mAh nickel-metal hydride cell delivers 11.52Wh — standard output for compact 1990s VHS camcorders without auxiliary power draw.
Connector slides onto the spring-loaded contact block at the camera base; locking tab seats flush and requires a quarter-turn to release.
We charged this cell in an NV-A1 body over eight hours; BMS accepted the pack without voltage fault, discharge curve flat until final 15 percent.
On first insertion, let the camera charge this cell fully from the body before recording — NV-A1 firmware calibrates the remaining-charge indicator during initial charge cycle only.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Panasonic NV-A1 Series — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (VBS20E)

This is a 4.8V, 2400mAh nickel-metal hydride replacement battery for the Panasonic NV-A1 series VHS camcorders. It fits the NV-A1, NV-A1EN, NV-ALEN, NV-CSLEN, and over a dozen related models from the same platform. Cross-references include HHR-V211, HHR-V212, P-V211, P-V212, VW-VBS10, VW-VBS20, and VSB-0190 among others.

  • NV-A1 platform compatibility: These camcorder models share the same 4.8V battery bay, connector pinout, and charge-control circuit. The BMS in the camera body reads cell voltage through the same two-pin contact arrangement across the entire series, so one cell works across all listed variants.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on compatible hardware. The BMS accepted the cell without tripping, voltage held stable across the draw curve, and charge termination triggered correctly at capacity.
  • First-charge protocol for NV-A1 camcorders: Charge this battery fully inside the OEM Panasonic charger or camera body before first use. The NV-A1's charge circuit uses delta-V termination — charging outside the OEM system on the first cycle can cause the camera to misread remaining capacity on subsequent uses.

Why the NV-A1 shows a dead battery indicator on a partially charged Ni-MH cell

Ni-MH cells have a flatter discharge curve than later lithium chemistries. The NV-A1's voltage-threshold indicator was calibrated to the original Panasonic cell's specific curve. A new replacement cell — even from the same chemistry — can sit at a voltage point the camera maps to "low" or "dead" before the cell is actually depleted. Running one full charge-discharge cycle through the OEM charger recalibrates how the camera reads that curve. After one conditioning cycle, the indicator typically tracks accurately again.

Battery percentage jumping erratically on the NV-A1 viewfinder display

This is a known behaviour when a new Ni-MH cell hasn't yet been cycled in the camera body. The camera's charge-state estimator maps voltage steps to percentage bands — a fresh cell's internal resistance differs slightly from a used one, causing voltage to spike or dip momentarily under load. The display reads those transient swings as large jumps in remaining charge. Run two full charge cycles through the OEM charger, keeping the cell above 4.6V at rest between cycles, and the display stabilises.

Frequently Asked Questions

My NV-A1 won't recognise the new battery at all — screen stays blank when I insert it

The NV-A1's charge-control circuit does a basic voltage-presence check before powering the display. If the replacement cell shipped at a low resting voltage — common with Ni-MH cells stored before shipping — the camera sees it as a dead or absent battery. Place the cell in the OEM Panasonic charger for a full charge cycle first, then insert it into the camera. A cell that's been fully charged externally will sit above the 4.4V threshold the camera needs to initialise the display.

The battery drains much faster in cold weather — is something wrong with the cell?

Nothing is wrong. Ni-MH chemistry is genuinely sensitive to temperature — internal resistance rises sharply below 10°C, which causes voltage to sag faster under the camcorder's motor and record-head draw. The cell holds its rated 2400mAh capacity at room temperature; cold conditions reduce usable capacity until the cell warms up. Keep the battery in an inside pocket before shooting in cold environments, and insert it into the camera immediately before recording to retain warmth.

The NV-A1 cuts out mid-recording even though the battery indicator showed charge remaining

The record mechanism, tape transport motor, and viewfinder together create a brief high-draw spike that the camera's indicator doesn't anticipate. On a Ni-MH cell that hasn't been fully conditioned yet, that spike can pull voltage below the camera's cutoff threshold — around 4.0V — even when the cell still holds residual charge. The camera shuts down to protect the circuit, not because the cell is empty. Complete two full charge-discharge cycles through the OEM charger, and ensure the resting voltage reads above 4.6V before a recording session.
