Why the Xenium CTX588 reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap

The Philips Xenium fuel gauge IC stores a discharge curve built around the original cell's impedance and capacity profile. When a new cell goes in, that stored curve no longer matches the physical cell. The gauge reads voltage correctly but maps it to the wrong state-of-charge value. One full discharge down to auto-shutdown followed by a complete charge forces the coulomb counter to relearn the curve against the new 4900mAh cell.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell

This happens when the phone's modem or display draws a high burst of current and the cell voltage sags below the BMS protection threshold faster than the gauge predicts. The gauge still reads 20–30% but the actual cell voltage under load has already dropped past the cutoff point. It is not a faulty battery — it is the fuel gauge IC running an uncalibrated curve against a fresh cell. Run two complete discharge-charge cycles and the reported percentage at shutdown will shift closer to 5–8%.

My Philips Xenium CTX588 won't turn on after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months — is it dead?

Li-Polymer cells in storage self-discharge slowly, and if the cell dropped below roughly 2.5V, the BMS has locked out to prevent damage. Plug into a wall charger — not a PC USB port — and leave it for 30–45 minutes without pressing the power button. The charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell before the BMS releases its lockout and allows a normal boot.

Fast charging stopped working the first time I plugged in the new AB5000BWMC battery — what's wrong?

On the first cycle, the BMS on a new cell will sometimes reject the handshake for proprietary fast-charge protocols until it has completed one standard-rate charge. Plug in using a basic 5V/1A charger and let it charge fully at standard rate. After that first full cycle, reconnect your fast charger and the protocol handshake should complete normally.

The phone feels warm near the back panel while charging the new battery — is that a sign of a problem?

A new Li-Polymer cell has slightly higher internal impedance than a well-cycled one, so the charge IC works harder in the first few cycles and generates more heat than you may be used to. This typically reduces after three to five full charge cycles as the cell conditions. If the back panel becomes hot to the touch rather than warm, remove the charger immediately and check that the charge current matches the Xenium's 5V input spec.
