Ni-MH cells show a flat voltage curve for most of their discharge, then drop sharply at end of charge. Clean or replace the filter first, then retest at full charge before assuming the battery is at fault.

Motor cuts out mid-use and then recovers after a few seconds

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead battery. When the filter or intake is restricted, motor current spikes above the cell's rated discharge threshold and the protection circuit opens. The pack recovers once current drops — which is why the vacuum restarts after a brief pause. Clear the blockage at the nozzle or filter housing first. If cutouts continue on an unblocked machine, check that the cell voltage reads at least 4.5V under load before suspecting a faulty replacement cell.
