This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. One full discharge-to-charge cycle forces the coulomb counter to reset and recalibrate against the actual new cell curve.

A new cell has higher internal impedance than a worn one, so the charge IC dissipates more energy as heat during the initial cycles. This is normal and reduces as the cell goes through its first three to five charge cycles. If the phone stays warm beyond five full cycles, check that the charge IC is not locked in constant-current phase — this can happen if the fuel gauge reading drifts and prevents transition to CV. Confirm the cell voltage at full charge reads between 4.35V and 4.40V.
