Fits Schneider model 58983 emergency lighting units, replacing OEM part number OVA58983 directly.
3.6V, 2000mAh Ni-CD cell delivers rated capacity for full-duration backup lighting during mains power loss.
Cylindrical form factor seats into standard emergency light battery slot with spring contacts on both ends.
We bench-tested this cell under continuous discharge load — BMS accepted the charge without fault codes or cutoff events.
Run a full manual test cycle within 24 hours of installation by holding the test button for rated duration; this confirms the new cell accepts load and allows the charge controller to register capacity before compliance audits.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Schneider 58983 Series — 3.6V Ni-CD Replacement Battery (OVA58983)

This is a 3.6V, 2000mAh Ni-CD cell for Schneider emergency lighting units fitted to models including 58983, TD310333, OVA58983, and 786966. It slots directly into the existing battery housing and connects to the onboard charge controller. Capacity is 2000mAh (7.2Wh), matching the original cell specification.

  • Shared cell across the 58983 family: These units run the same 3.6V charge rail and use the same bayonet-style cell connector across the model range, so one cell covers multiple fitting variants without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through the charge controller on a 58983 fitting. The controller accepted the cell voltage within the float window, moved from bulk charge to trickle, and the status LED shifted to green after a full charge cycle.
  • First test cycle after installation: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This confirms the new cell accepts load and lets the charge controller register actual cell capacity before your next scheduled compliance check.

Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement

A brand-new Ni-CD cell does not leave storage at full capacity. The electrochemical plates need at least one complete charge-discharge cycle before they reach rated capacity. Running a duration test immediately after installation will almost always result in the light cutting out early, triggering a compliance failure. Allow 24 hours on charge before the first test, then run the full duration cycle to condition the cell to its 2000mAh rating.

Charge indicator staying red after new cell installation

If the charge LED stays red after fitting the new cell, the charge controller has likely seen a cell voltage outside its float acceptance window — common when the replacement has self-discharged in storage below 3.2V. The controller can stall in fault mode rather than start a bulk charge. Disconnect the cell, wait 30 seconds, reconnect, and confirm the terminal voltage reads at least 3.2V before reconnection. If the LED shifts to amber or begins pulsing, the bulk charge cycle has started correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The emergency light dims and cuts out partway through a test — does the new battery need conditioning?

Yes. A Ni-CD cell shipped from storage has partially discharged plates that cannot deliver rated capacity on the first activation. The light dims because the cell voltage sags under load before the test duration completes. Charge the new cell for a full 24 hours before running any duration test. After one complete charge-discharge cycle, the cell stabilises at its rated 2000mAh and the test should run to full duration.

The fitting still shows a fault LED even though the new battery is confirmed seated and wired correctly — what's causing that?

Some Schneider fittings latch a fault state in the charge controller and will not self-clear after a battery swap. The controller needs a manual reset to re-run its initialisation sequence. Disconnect mains power to the fitting, wait 60 seconds for the capacitors to discharge, then restore mains. If the fault LED clears within two minutes of power-on, the controller has re-initialised and accepted the new cell.

The replacement battery has swollen inside the fitting — what went wrong?

Swelling in a Ni-CD cell is overcharge damage, not a cell defect. It happens when a fitting's trickle charge circuit runs at elevated temperature over years and the charge controller no longer terminates correctly — the new cell inherits that fault the moment it is installed. Before fitting another replacement, check the charge termination voltage at the cell terminals; it should drop to between 3.6V and 3.9V float once fully charged. If the controller is holding the cell above 4.2V continuously, the fitting's charge circuit needs inspection before a new cell is installed.
