This 3.7V 550mAh Li-Polymer cell replaces the original battery in the Sony MDR-DS6500, MDR-RF865R, MDR-RF985R, MDR-XB650BT, and related wireless headset models. It matches the OEM dimensions at 52.35 × 34.10 × 3.20mm and fits the existing battery compartment without modification. Voltage, connector, and BMS signalling match the original specification.

Why the MDR-DS6500 cuts out mid-transmission with a new battery
The MDR-DS6500 draws from two loads simultaneously — the audio amplifier and the DECT radio transmitter. Under that combined draw, a cell that hasn't completed its first conditioning cycle can sag below the BMS cutoff threshold, causing the headset to drop out briefly even though the charge indicator looks fine. This isn't a fault with the cell — it's the protection circuit doing its job on an unconditioned pack. Running two to three full charge-discharge cycles through the base station brings the cell to its rated capacity and eliminates the sag. After conditioning, mid-transmission dropout from voltage sag stops.
Base station shows full charge but headset cuts off after a few minutes
A new Li-Polymer cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 3.6–3.7V — not full charge. The base station's charge indicator can read this as "charged" before the cell has actually completed a full charge cycle. The result is a headset that appears ready but shuts off quickly under load. Fix this by placing the headset in the base, letting the charge LED cycle through to its completion state, and leaving it seated for another 30 minutes past that point. After one genuine full charge, the base station's reading and actual cell state will align.

The Sony base station is showing a charging error light after I put the new battery in — what's happening?
The base station runs a BMS handshake when it detects a new cell, and if that handshake doesn't complete cleanly, it throws a charge error instead of proceeding. Remove the headset from the base, leave it out for 30 seconds, then reseat it firmly and let the charge cycle restart from scratch. We saw this on the bench — the error cleared on the second seating once the connector made full contact and the BMS exchange completed. If the error persists after two attempts, check that the battery connector is fully seated inside the headset before returning it to the base.
Talk time is noticeably shorter than the original battery for the first few days — is something wrong with the cell?
Nothing is wrong. A fresh Li-Polymer cell doesn't hit rated capacity until it's been through three to five full charge-discharge cycles. The combined draw of the MDR-DS6500's audio amplifier and DECT radio means any capacity shortfall is noticeable immediately. Run the headset down until it powers off automatically, then charge it fully in the base — repeat this three times. By the fourth cycle, capacity stabilises and talk time reaches the level the cell is rated for.
The headset gets noticeably warm on the right side during long listening sessions — is that a battery problem?
Warmth on the battery side during extended use is normal for a 550mAh Li-Polymer cell sustaining the dual load of audio output and DECT radio transmission inside a compact housing with limited airflow. It becomes a concern only if the headset is hot to the touch or the base station throws a temperature fault. If the warmth is mild and the base charges without errors, the cell is operating within its thermal range. Give the headset a 15-minute rest in the base between extended sessions to let the cell temperature drop before the next charge cycle begins.
