Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Streamlight Strion HPL Flashlight — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (74031)
This is a 3.7V 3500mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Streamlight Strion HPL and Strion LED series flashlights. It fits a wide range of Strion variants including the Strion DS HL and ProTac HL USB. The OEM part numbers covered include 74031, 74032, 74175, and over thirty additional Streamlight references.
- Strion and ProTac platform fit: These models share the same cylindrical cell format, 3.7V nominal voltage rail, and proprietary charging contacts. The BMS handshake across this platform is consistent, so one cell format covers the full lineup without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge and discharge cycles on a Strion HPL body. The BMS engaged cleanly at both ends — no false low-battery cutoff on draw, and charge termination landed within spec at the top of the cycle.
- Turbo mode thermal load: The Strion HPL driver pulls significantly higher current in turbo mode than in standard. Let the cell rest for a few minutes after sustained turbo use before recharging — heat carried into the charger shortens cell life faster than cycle count alone.
Strion HPL driver stepping down output before the indicator shows low
The Strion HPL's driver has brownout protection built in. When cell voltage drops under high current draw, the driver steps output down before the low-battery indicator triggers — so the light dims visibly while the indicator still reads normal. This is the driver protecting itself, not a faulty cell. It happens earlier with an aged cell because internal resistance is higher, causing a larger voltage sag under load. A fresh 3500mAh cell at full charge will push the step-down point later in the discharge curve.
Cell draining to zero during storage — flashlight dead on first use
Li-ion cells self-discharge slowly in storage, and if the cell drops below the BMS deep-discharge threshold — typically around 2.5V — the protection circuit opens and the charger sees a dead load. The Streamlight charger may show no charge activity or a fault light. To recover, place the cell on a Li-ion charger capable of trickle or pre-charge mode at 0.1C until voltage climbs above 3.0V, then resume normal charging. Avoid storing the flashlight with a depleted cell for more than a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Strion HPL is noticeably dimmer than usual even though I just charged it — what's happening?
The most likely cause is that the cell isn't reaching a full charge, so the driver steps down output early to protect itself from low-voltage brownout. Check that the charging contacts on both the cell and cradle are clean — oxidation on the contacts is the most common reason the charger terminates early. A fully charged cell should read 4.1–4.2V at the terminals with a multimeter. If the cell measures below 4.0V after a full charge cycle, the cell has degraded and needs replacement.
My Strion flashlight flickers or cycles between modes near the end of a charge — is the driver faulty?
This is brownout cycling, not a driver fault. As cell voltage sags under high current draw at end of charge, the driver repeatedly hits its low-voltage cutoff, dims, partially recovers, then draws again — creating a flicker or mode-hop. Switch to a lower output mode immediately; that reduces current draw enough to stabilise the voltage above the cutoff threshold. The behaviour stops with a fresh, fully charged cell that can sustain voltage under load.
Why does my Strion HPL drain so much faster when I run it on the highest setting compared to medium?
Turbo mode draws several times more current than medium or low, compressing the same energy into a much shorter window. The cell capacity in milliamp-hours doesn't change — current draw does, so the cell depletes faster at high demand. This is normal behaviour for any high-output single-cell driver operating at maximum power. If turbo runtime has shortened noticeably over months of use, internal resistance in the cell has increased — measure resting voltage after a full charge; anything below 4.05V indicates capacity loss and the cell should be replaced.
