Fits Topcon 111C, 101C, DL-100 theodolite and transit models; replaces OEM part BT-31QB and BT-31Q.
7.2V, 1400mAh Ni-Cd pack delivers sustained power for angle measurement and electronic targeting during full surveying sessions.
Connector slides straight into the battery compartment with a single locking tab; orientation marked on the instrument housing.
We ran thermal and discharge cycles on the bench; the Ni-Cd BMS delivered flat voltage curve under sustained sensor load with no premature cutoff.
After installation, power on the 111C and run a full calibration cycle through the menu before field deployment — the instrument recalibrates its voltage baseline during calibration, and skipping this step causes false low-battery warnings mid-measurement.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon 111C / 101C Series — 7.2V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (BT-31QB)

This is a 7.2V, 1400mAh Ni-Cd replacement battery for the Topcon 111C, 101C, DL-100, and DL-101C surveying instruments. It fits the same bay as the original BT-31QB and BT-31Q packs. Voltage and capacity match OEM spec exactly — no modifications needed to the instrument.

  • 111C and DL-100 series fit: These models share the same 7.2V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers all listed models without adapter or firmware change.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a Topcon instrument. The BMS accepted the cell chemistry without fault codes, and the low-battery threshold triggered at the correct voltage level.
  • Post-install calibration on first field use: After fitting this pack, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before your first measurement session. The instrument maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings that interrupt field measurements even when the pack still has capacity.

BMS lockout after a Topcon instrument sat unused in its carry case for months

Ni-Cd cells self-discharge at roughly 1–2% per day at room temperature. A pack stored for three months inside a case can drop below 5.0V total — the point where the BMS enters sleep mode and refuses a standard charge cycle. The instrument will show no response on power-up, and the charger may not register the pack at all. To recover, apply a trickle charge at 100mA until cell voltage climbs above 6.0V, then resume normal charging.

Instrument shuts off mid-measurement when angle or distance logging is active

Sustained sensor load during active angle measurement draws more current than standby, and aged or partially discharged Ni-Cd cells develop voltage sag under that load. If the pack voltage dips below the instrument's cutoff threshold — typically around 5.4V under load — the instrument powers off to protect its electronics, even if the display showed adequate charge moments before. This is a cell condition issue, not a firmware fault. Charge the pack fully and retest; if the cutoff repeats at the same point in the measurement cycle, the cells are no longer holding voltage under load and the pack needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Topcon charger light stays green immediately after connecting the new pack — is it actually charging?

A green light at connection usually means the charger detected a resting voltage it interpreted as full. Ni-Cd chargers use delta-V detection, and a new pack straight from storage can sit at a voltage that triggers a false "full" reading. Remove the pack, leave it disconnected for 10 minutes, then reconnect — a genuine charge cycle should start within 30 seconds and the indicator should shift to red or amber. If it goes green again immediately, try a different charger or apply a short trickle charge at 100mA to nudge the cells above the detection floor.

Readings drift or reset to zero partway through a logging session even though the battery indicator looks fine.

This is voltage dropout under sustained sensor load, not a display fault. The Topcon's angle encoder and data logger pull combined current that can cause a momentary voltage dip on a partially discharged Ni-Cd pack — enough to reset the measurement circuit without fully powering off the instrument. The battery indicator averages voltage and won't catch a sub-100ms sag. Charge the pack fully before the session and avoid starting a long logging run below the three-quarter charge mark.

The instrument powers on fine at the start of the day but cuts out the moment I connect it to a PC for data transfer.

USB data transfer adds the PC interface circuit to the existing instrument draw — on the Topcon DL-series this combined load can exceed what a mid-state Ni-Cd pack delivers without voltage sag. The BMS sees the voltage drop and cuts power to protect the electronics. Transfer data with the pack at a full charge, and if the cut-out repeats, check that the USB cable is data-rated and not drawing charge current back through the port, which adds further load. A fully charged pack should sustain the transfer without cutoff.
