Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon CTS-3000 / GPT Series — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BT-32Q)
This is a 7.2V, 2500mAh Ni-MH replacement for the Topcon BT-32Q battery pack. It fits the CTS-3000 total station and the GPT-1000, GPT-1003, and GPT-2000 series instruments, along with fourteen additional compatible models. Voltage and capacity match the original Topcon specification exactly.
- CTS-3000 and GPT platform compatibility: These Topcon total stations share the same battery bay geometry, 7.2V rail, and BMS handshake protocol. The BT-32Q connector keys into the instrument contact block without modification, and the pack registers normally on the battery status screen.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a CTS-3000 body. The BMS held stable across EDM firing sequences and angular encoder reads — both of which pull current simultaneously and stress the pack harder than standby draw.
- First deployment calibration: After installing a new pack, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before heading into the field. The CTS-3000 maps battery state during calibration, and skipping this step causes the low-battery indicator to trigger prematurely on your first measurement session.
BMS lockout after the instrument sat unused in a carry case for months
Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–2% per day at room temperature. A pack stored for several months can drop below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 5.4V for a 7.2V Ni-MH pack — and the protection circuit locks out to prevent cell reversal. The instrument will not power on and the charger may show no activity. Place the pack on the charger and leave it for a full 12-hour cycle; most BMS circuits re-initialise once the charger trickles enough current to bring cell voltage back above the recovery floor.
Instrument shuts down mid-measurement with no prior low-battery warning
This happens when the EDM fires and the angular encoder reads at the same time — combined current draw causes a brief voltage sag that the BMS reads as an under-voltage fault. An aged or partially depleted pack sags harder under simultaneous load than the battery indicator anticipates. The instrument cuts power before any warning appears on screen. Charge the pack fully, confirm the resting voltage sits at or above 8.4V off the charger, then retest — if sag shutdowns continue on a full charge, the cells have lost capacity and the pack needs replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions
The CTS-3000 powers on fine but shuts off the moment I start a USB data transfer to the PC — is this a battery issue?
USB data transfer adds a combined draw on top of whatever the instrument's processor is already doing, and a low or degraded pack sags under that load and trips the BMS undervoltage cutoff. Charge the pack fully first — resting voltage should read at or above 8.4V off the charger before you attempt a transfer. If it still shuts off mid-transfer on a full charge, the cells have lost enough capacity that they can no longer sustain the combined draw. Replace the pack and retest.
The battery percentage on the CTS-3000 display jumps around or reads incorrectly after fitting a new pack — what's happening?
The instrument's voltage-threshold indicator is calibrated to the discharge curve of the original cells. A new pack has a slightly different internal resistance and resting voltage, so the display can read inconsistently until the instrument has seen at least one full charge-to-discharge cycle. Run the calibration routine through the instrument menu, then do one full field session without interrupting the discharge. After that cycle the display stabilises against the new pack's actual curve.
The new BT-32Q pack won't take a charge after sitting in my equipment bag all winter — charger light just stays green immediately.
An immediate green light means the charger detected voltage below its initialisation floor and defaulted to a "complete" state rather than starting a charge cycle — this is a BMS sleep lockout, not a dead pack. Connect the pack to the charger, leave it for 12 hours undisturbed, and check again. Most Topcon chargers will trickle enough current to pull the cells back above the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 5.4V — at which point the charger switches to a normal charge cycle and the light changes to red or amber.
