  • Satellite U845W fitment: The U845W uses a flat Li-Polymer pack with a specific BMS handshake tied to the G71C000EH110 and PA5065U-1BRS part numbers. This cell carries the same EEPROM data structure the U845W's EC firmware expects on the SMBus line, so the system recognises it without throwing an unknown battery error.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on U845W hardware. The BMS communicated correctly over SMBus, the fuel gauge IC initialised, and charge terminated cleanly at the 8.4V pack ceiling without thermal flags.

Why the U845W BIOS reports poor battery health after a cell swap

The U845W stores battery health data in EEPROM on the old pack. When you install a new cell, the BIOS reads no prior cycle history and flags the battery as degraded or unknown. This is a data-gap problem, not a fault with the new cell. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a complete charge lets the firmware write a fresh baseline. After that cycle, the health indicator updates correctly.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve. The IC maps the old cell's voltage-to-capacity slope onto the new pack, so it calls the battery empty several percentage points early. Under full CPU and display load, the voltage cliff arrives sooner than the gauge predicts. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and full recharge cycles — after that, the gauge anchors its low-voltage cutoff to the correct point, typically around 6.0V under load.

The fuel gauge IC lost its reference point when the old cell was removed. It has no stored data to map voltage against capacity, so it reports 0% until it sees a complete charge cycle. Plug the laptop in, let it charge to 100% without interrupting it, then do one full discharge to hibernate. After that cycle the IC writes a new baseline and the percentage reads correctly.

My U845W battery info screen shows the Wh rating as something lower than 52Wh after fitting this cell — is the battery undersized?

No. The Wh figure shown in Toshiba's battery utility or Windows Device Manager pulls from EEPROM data on the cell, which may carry a conservative factory-rated value rather than the actual chemistry capacity. The cell itself is 52.02Wh as specified. If you want to verify, check the pack voltage at full charge with a multimeter — a fully charged 7.4V Li-Polymer pack should read between 8.3V and 8.4V across the main terminals.

New battery charged to 100% but the U845W won't charge it above 80% on subsequent cycles — is the cell faulty?

This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. Toshiba's eco charge mode caps the charge ceiling at 80% to reduce cell stress during daily use. Open Toshiba's power management utility (or the Settings app on newer firmware), find the battery charge mode setting, and switch it from "Eco" to "Full Charge." The next charge cycle will run to 100%.
