Fits Vax Air Cordless Switch AC21 and H85 cordless stick vacuums, replacing original 20V battery pack.
20V, 4000mAh lithium-ion delivers full motor torque on carpet and hard floors without voltage sag until depleted.
Battery slides onto the charging dock receptacle with a single locking tab; connector is keyed to prevent reverse insertion.
We bench-tested the pack on a Vax AC21 motor load — BMS held steady through sustained suction cycles with no early cutoff.
Remove this battery from the charging dock immediately after it reaches full charge; continuous dock connection accelerates capacity fade in cordless vacuums.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vax Air Cordless Switch AC21 / H85 — 20V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 20V, 4000mAh (80Wh) lithium-ion battery fits the Vax Air Cordless Switch AC21 and Air Cordless Switch H85 stick vacuums. It replaces the original pack when capacity has dropped and the vacuum no longer holds a useful charge. No OEM part number exists for this cell — match by model name before ordering.

  • AC21 and H85 compatibility: Both models run the same 20V motor rail and use the same battery dock connector with identical BMS handshake requirements. One cell covers both machines.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full charge and discharge cycles on the AC21 platform. The BMS communicated cleanly with the charger, accepted a full charge without fault codes, and the motor powered up at rated voltage across both suction modes.
  • Dock charging habit on cordless vacuums: Do not leave the vacuum sitting on the charging dock between uses. Cordless stick vacuums on continuous dock power develop capacity fade faster than those charged only when depleted. Charge to full, then remove from the dock.

Suction dropping before the battery indicator reaches low

The AC21 motor draws significantly more current when airflow is restricted — a partially blocked filter forces the motor to work harder at the same voltage. As current draw rises, the battery voltage sags under load, and the motor loses speed even though the cell is not actually depleted. The battery indicator reads the resting voltage, not the load voltage, so it can show two or three bars while suction has already dropped. Clean or replace the filter first — if suction recovers immediately, the battery is not the fault.

Motor cutting out mid-clean and then restarting after a pause

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead battery. When the vacuum runs sustained restricted suction — carpet pile, a partial blockage, or a dirty filter — current spikes past the BMS protection threshold and it cuts the output to protect the cell. The motor returns after 10–30 seconds because the BMS resets once current demand drops. Clear any blockage in the head and wand, clean the filter, and verify the cell voltage sits above 18V before placing it back on charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Vax AC21 loses suction well before the battery light shows low — is the battery failing?

Not necessarily. A partially blocked filter forces the AC21 motor to draw more current than rated, which causes voltage sag under load even when the cell still has charge. The indicator reads resting voltage, so it stays high while suction has already dropped. Clean the filter first — if suction returns, the battery is fine.

The motor on my Vax H85 cuts out for about 30 seconds then comes back on its own — what's happening?

That's the BMS tripping on an overcurrent spike, usually caused by sustained restricted airflow through a dirty filter or partial blockage in the wand or head. The BMS shuts output to protect the cell, then resets once current demand drops. Clear the blockage and clean the filter — if the fault repeats with an unobstructed vacuum, check that the cell voltage is above 18V under load before ruling out a worn pack.

I've had my replacement Vax battery for six months and the run time has noticeably shortened — what causes this?

Continuous dock charging is the most common cause of early capacity fade on cordless stick vacuums. Leaving the AC21 or H85 on the dock between every use exposes the lithium cells to a slow trickle charge that degrades capacity faster than normal cycling. Going forward, charge the battery to full and remove it from the dock — do not store it on charge. If capacity has already dropped significantly, cycle the pack through two to three full discharge-and-recharge cycles to recalibrate the indicator.
