Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

VeriFone Ruby 2 / Ruby CI — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BPK169-001-01-A)

This 7.4V 2600mAh Li-ion battery replaces part BPK169-001-01-A in the VeriFone Ruby 2 and Ruby CI payment terminals. It also fits PCA169-404-01-A and PCA169-001-01 terminal configurations. The cell, connector, and BMS profile match the original so the terminal's charge management system accepts the replacement without error codes.

  • Ruby 2 and Ruby CI compatibility: Both terminals share the same 7.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. The charge IC in each unit communicates with the battery's protection circuit the same way, so one cell works across both platforms without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on a Ruby 2 unit. The BMS accepted the handshake on first boot, the charge indicator updated correctly, and the protection circuit responded to load spikes from the receipt printer without tripping.
  • First deployment tip for POS terminals: After installation, complete one full transaction cycle before putting the terminal into a live lane. The Ruby 2 maps battery capacity during normal operation and needs at least one complete power cycle to calibrate the charge indicator accurately.

Terminal rebooting mid-transaction after battery swap

The Ruby 2's receipt printer draws a sharp current spike the moment it fires — often 1.5A or more for a fraction of a second. If the BMS on a new cell hasn't completed its initial calibration cycle, that spike can trip the overcurrent protection and cut power mid-transaction. This is not a faulty battery. Run the terminal through two or three complete charge-discharge cycles before heavy use. Once the protection circuit has mapped normal load behaviour, nuisance trips stop.

Terminal stuck at 99% charge indicator for hours after a full charge

New lithium cells ship at a partial state of charge. When first placed on charge, the Ruby 2's charge IC enters a top-off phase once the cell reaches roughly 4.1V per cell — the indicator reads 99% and holds there while the controller trickle-charges to 4.2V. This is normal charge IC behaviour, not a stuck sensor. The indicator moves to 100% and the terminal switches to maintenance mode once the top-off threshold is met, typically after the cell voltage stabilises at 8.4V total.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Ruby 2 won't turn on at all after sitting in a drawer for a few months — is the battery dead?

Deep self-discharge is the likely cause. Lithium cells left uncharged for extended periods drop below the BMS recovery threshold — typically under 2.5V per cell — and the protection circuit locks out to prevent damage. Plug the terminal into mains power and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on; the charge IC needs time to trickle the cell back above the recovery voltage before it allows a normal boot.

The Ruby CI shows a low-battery warning almost immediately after a full charge — why?

Capacity fade in the original battery often causes the terminal's charge indicator to recalibrate to a degraded baseline. When a new cell is installed, the charge IC needs one full discharge-to-charge cycle to re-map actual capacity correctly. Run the terminal through one complete cycle — from a full charge down to the automatic low-battery cutoff, then back to 100% — and the indicator will read against the new cell's actual 2600mAh capacity rather than the old degraded profile.

The Ruby 2 gets noticeably warm during a busy transaction period — is that a battery issue?

Heat during heavy use is a combined load effect, not a fault. The terminal is simultaneously driving the display, the wireless radio, and the receipt printer — the printer alone pulls significant current each time it fires. The battery cell generates heat under that combined draw, and the terminal's housing has limited airflow. Ensure the terminal isn't stacked against other hardware or enclosed in a tight mount that restricts ambient airflow around the battery compartment. If the unit shuts down from heat, check that the thermal cutoff in the BMS resets after a 10-minute cool-down before restarting.
