Fits Vertex Standard FT-23R, FT-33R, and FT-73R portables; replaces FNB-10, FNB-10H, FNB-12, FNB-12H, FNB-14, FNB-14H, FNB-17, and FNB-17H.
12V, 1000mAh Ni-MH delivers full transmit power on the FT-23R without voltage sag during sustained RF output.
Gold contact strip slides into the radio's vertical slot with a single locking tab; orientation is keyed.
We bench-tested the pack on an FT-23R simulator rig; BMS accepted dock current draw without cutoff during consecutive PTT cycles.
If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Vertex platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new pack before charging starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard FT-23R / FT-33R / FT-73R / FT-411 Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (FNB-17)

This is a 12V, 1000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery pack for Vertex Standard portable handheld transceivers. It cross-references OEM part numbers FNB-10, FNB-10H, FNB-12, FNB-12H, FNB-14, FNB-14H, FNB-17, and FNB-17H. Compatible models include the FT-23R, FT-33R, FT-73R, and FT-411, among others.

  • FT-23R / FT-33R / FT-73R / FT-411 compatibility: These models share the same 12V battery architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — one pack form factor covers the full range without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit loads on the FT-23R. The BMS handled PTT current spikes without tripping, and voltage held steady across sustained RF output bursts.
  • First insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first seating, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. This platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the FT-23R cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly installed battery

A new Ni-MH cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 1.2V per cell, with the full 12V pack sitting closer to 11.8V. When PTT is pressed, transmit current spikes sharply and voltage sags under load. If the BMS reads that sag as a fault condition, it trips and drops the radio mid-transmission. A full charge cycle before first use brings cell voltage to operating level and closes the gap between open-circuit and under-load voltage, preventing false BMS trips during TX.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after pack swap

The FT-23R uses a simple voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar maps to a voltage band, not a fuel gauge calculation. A new pack at storage voltage reads low on that scale and displays one bar fewer than actual capacity. This is not a fault. Charge the pack fully in the dock until the charger LED goes solid green, then power on the radio — the indicator will reflect the correct charge state at 12V loaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

My FT-23R cuts out right when I press PTT on the new battery — is the pack defective?

It is not defective. New Ni-MH cells ship at storage voltage, and that lower open-circuit voltage sags further the moment transmit current hits. The BMS trips on that sag and drops the circuit before the transmission completes. Charge the pack fully first — a solid green dock LED confirms it — then retest PTT. Cutouts stop once the pack is at full 12V operating voltage.

The charger dock fault LED never clears after I installed the replacement battery — what is happening?

The dock is rejecting the pack because cell voltage is below the acceptance threshold the charger expects before it starts a charge cycle. This happens when the pack has sat in storage and dropped below approximately 10.5V open-circuit. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, reseat it firmly, and hold it in place for a few seconds. If the LED still does not clear, the cells need a recovery charge — use a Ni-MH smart charger that has a recovery or refresh mode to bring voltage back above the dock acceptance threshold.

The radio drops to noticeably weaker TX output halfway through a long shift — what causes that on the FT-411?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a sudden BMS trip. As the Ni-MH cells discharge, internal impedance rises and voltage under transmit load drops below the threshold the radio needs for full TX power. The radio's power management steps down output to stay within operating range. A 1000mAh pack has a defined charge window — once sag under load pushes terminal voltage below roughly 10.8V, reduced TX power is normal and expected. Swap to a fresh charged pack to restore full output for the remainder of the shift.
