Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Xerox 490 / 980 Printer — 3.6V Li-SOCl2 Replacement Battery
This is a 3.6V lithium thionyl chloride cell rated at 1200mAh (4.32Wh), built to the same footprint as the original backup cell in Xerox 490 and 980 printers. It powers the onboard SRAM and real-time clock, keeping programmed settings and the system clock intact when mains power is removed. Without a live backup cell, both are lost the moment the printer powers down.
- 490 and 980 compatibility: Both models use the same 3.6V backup architecture and identical cell footprint (26.36 × 15.50 × 14.60mm). The SRAM retention circuit draws continuously from this cell regardless of mains state, so both printers consume the backup cell at the same rate over time.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We confirmed stable float voltage and verified the cell holds the SRAM rail above the 2.5V retention threshold under continuous low-current draw. The BMS on this chemistry is passive — no handshake, no reset — so what matters is cell voltage, not protocol.
- Hot-swap is mandatory on this cell: Always replace this battery with the printer powered on and running. Li-SOCl2 cells in backup roles have no charge path — the printer cannot recover SRAM from a dead cell. Pull the old cell and seat the new one before power is interrupted.
Xerox 490 losing saved settings every time it powers off
The 490 stores user-configured parameters and network settings in SRAM, which requires a constant low-level voltage from the backup cell to retain data. Once the Li-SOCl2 cell drops below approximately 2.5V, the SRAM loses its retention voltage and flushes on every power cycle. This is not a firmware fault — the settings are genuinely gone, not hidden. Replace the cell while the printer is live and reconfigure once; the new cell will hold those settings indefinitely at its rated self-discharge rate.
New cell reading below 3.6V immediately after installation
Li-SOCl2 cells develop a passivation layer on the lithium anode during storage, which temporarily suppresses open-circuit voltage. A freshly installed cell may read as low as 3.2V on the printer's diagnostic readout in the first few hours. This is normal and not a sign of a faulty or partially discharged cell. The passivation layer breaks down under load — leave the printer powered on and the cell will stabilise at or above 3.5V within 12–24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Xerox 490 lost all its settings after I swapped the backup battery — how do I get them back?
The SRAM wiped because the printer was powered off, or the old cell was removed before the new one was seated. Li-SOCl2 cells have no charge path, so there is zero retention once voltage drops below 2.5V during a swap. The settings cannot be recovered from the printer itself — you will need to reconfigure everything manually or restore from a saved configuration file if one exists. For the next swap, keep the printer powered on and seat the new cell before pulling the old one.
The clock on the Xerox 980 is showing the wrong date and time after the battery replacement — what happened?
The real-time clock lost power during the swap and reset to its default state. This happens when the old cell is removed before the new one makes contact, even briefly. The new cell will sustain the RTC going forward, but it cannot recover the time that was lost. Set the correct date and time manually through the printer's control panel or configuration interface, then confirm the clock holds across a power cycle to verify the new cell is seated correctly.
The replacement cell looks fine but it's depleting faster than the original — what causes that?
Li-SOCl2 self-discharge rate roughly doubles for every 10°C rise in ambient temperature. If the printer sits in a warm enclosure, near heat vents, or in a poorly ventilated cabinet, the cell will drain significantly faster than the rated shelf life suggests. The cell itself is not faulty — it is responding to its operating environment. Relocate the printer away from heat sources or improve enclosure ventilation, and check the cell voltage annually rather than waiting for a low-battery warning.
