Fits Philips HeartStart FR3 AED, replaces OEM part 989803150161 and equivalent part numbers 453564594921, 453564288031.
12V, 4700mAh lithium-manganese dioxide cell delivers the energy budget required for full defibrillation therapy delivery and device boot cycles.
Connector seats into the battery compartment slot with positive terminal facing outward; tab locks into the FR3 frame without tools.
We bench tested this cell on a HeartStart FR3 trainer unit—BMS passed the internal medical device power-on self-test on first full charge cycle without fault codes.
After installation, allow the FR3 to complete its full power-on self-test cycle without interruption; medical devices run BMS verification at startup and interrupting this sequence causes a false battery fault that persists until next full reboot.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Philips HeartStart FR3 AED — 12V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery (989803150161)

This is a 12V, 4700mAh lithium-manganese dioxide battery for the Philips HeartStart FR3 AED. It fits the HeartStart FR3, DSA HeartStart FR3, and HeartStart FR3 861388 defibrillator variants. Chemistry and voltage match OEM specification 989803150161.

  • FR3 platform compatibility: The FR3 family shares a common battery bay, BMS handshake protocol, and 12V power rail across all listed variants. The BMS authenticates cell chemistry at startup — Li-MnO2 is required. Substituting a different chemistry type will trigger a persistent battery fault on the device status display.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through the FR3 startup sequence and verified BMS handshake completion, charge acceptance, and self-test pass status. The BMS executed its readiness verification without flagging cell chemistry or capacity errors after one full charge-discharge cycle.
  • Post-installation self-test cycle: After fitting this battery, allow the FR3 to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The device runs BMS verification at startup — cutting power during this sequence logs a false battery fault that persists until a clean reboot is performed from a rested state.

Why the FR3 BMS rejects a new Li-MnO2 cell on first installation

The HeartStart FR3 uses a conservative BMS calibration set against a known OEM cell profile. A brand-new cell has not yet established its discharge curve in the BMS memory, so the first self-test can read capacity as out-of-range even when the cell is fully charged. This is not a fault with the cell — it is the BMS applying OEM thresholds before a learn cycle completes. One full charge-to-discharge cycle resolves the mismatch and allows the BMS to log accurate capacity data going forward.

FR3 displaying low battery status immediately after a confirmed full charge

This symptom appears when the BMS self-test threshold has not been met by the new cell's first charge cycle. The FR3's charge IC applies a conservative initial charge limit on unfamiliar cells, which can prevent the battery reaching the full state-of-charge the BMS expects before clearing the low-battery flag. Charge the battery fully with the device powered off, then power on and allow the complete startup self-test to run uninterrupted. If the flag persists after one full cycle, check that resting voltage measures at or above 12V before re-seating the battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

The FR3 won't power on at all after the replacement battery sat in storage for several months — is the cell dead?

Li-MnO2 cells self-discharge slowly in storage, but if voltage drops below the FR3's BMS recovery threshold the device refuses to boot rather than charge the cell back up. Connect the battery to a compatible charger externally and bring resting voltage back above 11V before re-seating it in the device. Once voltage recovers past that threshold, the BMS will accept the cell and allow normal startup. Do not attempt to force-boot the FR3 below 10.5V — the BMS will lock out the cell permanently at that point.

The FR3 passed its self-test after battery swap, but then shut off unexpectedly during a readiness drill — what causes that?

New Li-MnO2 cells have a higher internal resistance in the first several cycles, which means the FR3's charge-delivery load profile creates a larger voltage sag under simulated defibrillation draw than a fully conditioned cell would show. The BMS interprets that sag as a low-capacity event and trips a protective cutoff. Run three to five complete charge-discharge cycles on the battery before using the device in any drill or clinical context. Voltage sag on a conditioned cell during load test should stabilise above 10.8V.

The FR3 self-test fails every morning even though the battery was fully charged the night before — why does the failure repeat?

The FR3 runs an automated daily self-test and compares current cell state against a stored capacity baseline in BMS memory. If the BMS learn cycle was never completed after the battery swap, that baseline remains set to the previous cell's profile and the new cell fails every comparison. Power the device off completely, run one full uninterrupted charge-discharge cycle, then allow the FR3 to perform a clean startup self-test from a rested, fully charged state. Once the BMS logs the new cell's actual capacity, the daily self-test will clear consistently.
