This is a 3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH battery for the Sager SPP-88960 cordless phone handset. It replaces the original cell pack when the handset no longer holds charge or talk time has dropped noticeably. Voltage and connector match the SPP-88960 handset bay directly.

  • SPP-88960 handset compatibility: The SPP-88960 uses a 3.6V Ni-MH cell pack — three NiMH cells in series — with a footprint of 54.46 × 32.07 × 11.22mm. This replacement matches that voltage rail and physical format, so the handset BMS accepts the pack without flagging a fault.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a Ni-MH compatible tester. The BMS in the SPP-88960 base station accepted the pack from the first charge and showed a normal green charge indicator after a full conditioning cycle.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH handsets: Place the handset in the base immediately after installing this battery and leave it for a full 16 hours before using it. NiMH cells in cordless phones need this slow initial charge to reach rated capacity — skipping it results in shortened talk time that does not improve on its own.

Range dropping on the SPP-88960 after a battery swap

The SPP-88960 DECT radio draws a brief current spike each time the handset transmits. A Ni-MH pack that has not been conditioned yet cannot sustain voltage under that RF load, so the handset drops output power and range shrinks noticeably. This is not a fault with the battery or the phone. Run three to five full charge and discharge cycles through normal use and the pack's internal resistance drops to spec, which keeps voltage stable under transmit load.

Ni-MH batteries that have sat in storage can arrive with a resting voltage below the threshold the SPP-88960 base uses to confirm a valid pack is seated. When the base sees voltage below roughly 3.0V, it may flash an error LED or refuse to start a charge cycle. Remove the handset, wait ten seconds, and reseat it firmly — this resets the base detection circuit. If the error persists, hold the handset in the base for 30 minutes before removing; trickle current from some base stations is enough to bring the pack voltage above the acceptance threshold.

It is not faulty. NiMH cells in cordless handsets need three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity — this is normal chemistry behaviour, not a defect. Each cycle the internal resistance drops slightly and the pack holds more charge. Run the handset until the low-battery tone sounds, return it to the base for a full 16-hour charge, and repeat until talk time stabilises.

The handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix that?

Some DECT phones drop their pairing data when the handset is fully de-powered during a battery change. The SPP-88960 handset stores pairing in volatile memory backed by the battery, so removing the old pack before inserting the new one can erase it. Re-register the handset using the base station's pairing button — hold it for five seconds until the base beeps, then follow the on-screen prompt on the handset to complete registration.

The SPP-88960 battery drains completely overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what causes that?

This points to the handset not making a clean electrical contact with the base charging pins, not a battery defect. If the contacts are slightly misaligned, the base never starts a charge cycle and the handset draws standby current from the pack unassisted until it is flat. Clean both the handset contacts and the base cradle pins with a dry cotton swab, then reseat the handset and confirm the charging LED lights within 30 seconds.
