Fits Switel DFT 8172, DFT 8171, DFT 8173, and DF 812 cordless handsets; replaces OEM Switel battery pack.
2.4V 600mAh Ni-MH delivers the voltage and capacity this DECT handset needs for full transmit power and standby hold.
Connector slides straight into the handset battery bay; tab locks firm and seats flush against the door.
We bench-tested this pack on a DFT 8172 base charger; BMS accepted the cell on first insertion with green indicator light.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require a slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Switel DFT 8172 / DFT 8171 / DFT 8173 / DF 812 — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 2.4V 600mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for Switel cordless DECT handsets. It fits the DFT 8172, DFT 8171, DFT 8173, and DF 812 series. The cell dimensions are 35.40 × 32.50 × 6.70mm — measure your original before installing if you are unsure.

  • DFT / DF 812 platform compatibility: These handsets share the same 2.4V two-cell NiMH pack format and connector orientation. The base station charges via the same contact rail across all listed models, so one pack fits the full range without any wiring changes.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a NiMH-capable analyser. The cells reached 600mAh at rated capacity after three conditioning cycles. The protection circuit held cutoff voltage correctly at both ends of the charge window.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phones need a slow initial charge to align cell capacity across both cells in the pack — skipping this shortens the usable charge window from the first week.

Base station showing no charge light on a new NiMH pack

A NiMH pack that has been in storage can drop below 2.0V total — the Switel base station expects to see a minimum voltage before it begins the charge cycle. Below that threshold, the base interprets the pack as absent or faulty and the charge indicator stays off. The fix is a slow trickle charge: some universal NiMH chargers can force a recovery charge at low current (around 50–100mA) until voltage climbs back above 2.2V. Once the pack clears that floor, reseat the handset and the base station should recognise it and resume normal charging.

Handset losing range shortly after a battery swap

DECT transmit circuits on these handsets draw a short current spike when the RF module is active. A NiMH pack that has not been fully conditioned yet has higher internal resistance, which causes voltage to sag under that load. When the voltage sags far enough, the RF output drops and the handset struggles to hold the base station link at distance. Run three full charge-and-use cycles first — internal resistance falls as the cells condition — and check that resting voltage sits at or above 2.4V before each session.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Switel DFT 8172 talk time is much shorter than the original battery — is something wrong with the new pack?

No — NiMH cordless phone batteries typically need three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity. The cells ship in a partially discharged state and the two cells in the pack take a few cycles to balance. Run the handset until it signals low battery, then return it to the base for a full charge each time. By cycle three, talk time should be close to the 600mAh rated figure.

The handset lost its pairing with the base station after I replaced the battery — how do I fix it?

Some DECT handsets lose their pairing registration when power is completely removed, because the pairing data is held in a memory that relies on battery voltage to persist. Removing the old pack clears that memory. You need to re-register the handset to the base: on most Switel DECT models, press and hold the registration button on the base until the handset enters pairing mode, then confirm on the handset. Check the DFT 8172 manual for the exact key sequence if the standard method does not respond.

The battery drains completely overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what causes that?

This is almost always a contact issue, not a faulty cell. If the handset is not fully seated on the base charging cradle, the charge contacts do not make a reliable connection and the handset runs on battery in standby rather than drawing from the base. Remove the handset, wipe the gold charge contacts on both the handset and base with a dry cloth, then reseat it firmly until you hear or feel it click into position. Check that the charge indicator light activates within 30 seconds of reseating.
