Fits Garmin inReach Explorer+ (Quest 2) and replaces OEM part IA3A227A2 and IA3Y114F2.
3.7V, 1050mAh lithium-ion cell delivers the same power density as the original for full device runtime between charge cycles.
Connector plugs directly into the battery slot with a single locking tab; orientation is keyed and will not force into the compartment.
We bench-tested this cell in a Quest 2 unit and confirmed the BMS accepted the new pack on first insertion with normal charge curve behavior.
After fitting this cell, power the device fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation use — cold start takes 5–10 minutes after battery swap versus under one minute on subsequent warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Quest 2 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (IA3A227A2)

This 3.7V, 1050mAh Li-ion cell replaces the original battery in the Garmin inReach Explorer+ (Quest 2). The inReach Explorer+ is a satellite communicator and GPS navigator used for two-way messaging and emergency SOS in areas without cellular coverage. Keeping this battery healthy is critical — a dead cell means no navigation and no emergency contact.

  • inReach Explorer+ fit: The Quest 2 platform runs on a single 3.7V cell with a 3-pin connector that carries both charge and BMS data. The replacement cell matches the original connector pinout and voltage rail so the device firmware recognises the pack correctly on first boot.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the inReach Explorer+ platform. The BMS accepted the pack without fault codes, and the device reported charge state accurately across the full voltage range from 4.2V at full charge down to the 3.0V cutoff.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after swap: After fitting this cell, power the unit on outdoors before your trip. A full power interruption clears the satellite almanac, so the GPS will run a cold start — allow 5 to 10 minutes for first fix. Once acquired, subsequent warm starts lock in under a minute.

GPS accuracy dropping at low battery on the inReach Explorer+

When cell voltage drops below roughly 3.5V, the inReach Explorer+ reduces power to the GPS receiver to protect core functions like SOS transmission. This lowers receiver sensitivity and can degrade position accuracy by 10 to 30 metres in open sky conditions. In dense canopy or canyon terrain, the effect is more pronounced. Keep the battery above 30% on any navigation leg where position accuracy matters.

Device shuts off without warning before the battery indicator hits empty

After a full power-loss battery swap, the fuel gauge IC has no reference data and estimates remaining capacity from open-circuit voltage alone. This throws the shut-off threshold out of sync with the visual indicator, so the device cuts power while still showing one or two bars. Run two full charge and discharge cycles after fitting the new cell — the fuel gauge recalibrates against real cycle data and the indicator syncs to the actual cutoff voltage of 3.0V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My inReach Explorer+ lost all my saved routes after swapping the battery — are they gone for good?

Routes and waypoints stored in non-volatile flash memory survive a battery swap intact. What can be lost is the active navigation state held in volatile RAM — any route you were mid-navigation on at the moment of power removal will not resume. Reconnect to Garmin Explore via the app after the swap and sync your account; all saved routes stored to your profile will restore over satellite or Bluetooth.

Satellite lock is taking 10 minutes after I fitted the new battery — is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong. A complete power interruption clears the satellite almanac and ephemeris data the device uses to predict where satellites are. The unit runs a cold start and has to download fresh almanac data from scratch, which takes 5 to 10 minutes with clear sky view. After that first successful fix, the device caches the data and warm starts will lock in well under a minute.

Active navigation is draining the new battery noticeably faster than standby mode — is the cell faulty?

The cell is not faulty. In active navigation, the GPS receiver samples position continuously, the display stays on, and the satellite modem polls for messages at regular intervals — all three drawing current simultaneously. In standby, only the modem checks in periodically. The gap in draw is a device behaviour, not a cell defect. Lower display brightness and set the tracking interval to 10 minutes instead of 2 to reduce active draw significantly.
