Apple iPad Air 2 / iPad 6 — 3.8V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (A1547)

This 3.8V, 7300mAh lithium-polymer battery is a direct cell replacement for the Apple iPad Air 2 and iPad 6. It fits models A1566 and related variants across the WiFi and cellular configurations. Swap it in when the original cell no longer holds a useful charge or fails to power on at all.

  • iPad Air 2 and iPad 6 platform fitment: Both generations share the A1547 cell format — same connector pinout, same BMS handshake voltage, and the same 186.50 × 130.00 × 3.50mm footprint inside the adhesive-bonded chassis.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on iPad Air 2 hardware. The BMS accepted charge negotiation on the first cycle, held voltage stable across display and WiFi combined load, and showed no thermal events through a full depletion run.
  • Fuel gauge reset after installation: After fitting this cell, run one full discharge to automatic shutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This gives the iPad's fuel gauge IC a calibration reference against the new cell and clears the inaccurate percentage display that almost always appears after a swap.

iPad Air 2 shutting down at 15–25% remaining after battery replacement

This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old cell's voltage curve. The new cell hits a voltage cliff under combined display and WiFi load at a point the gauge hasn't mapped yet — so the iPad reads it as a hard cutoff. It's not a faulty cell. One full discharge-to-shutdown followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% resets the reference. After that cycle, the gauge tracks the new cell's curve accurately and the early shutdowns stop.

Fast charging unavailable on iPad Air 2 after battery swap

The iPad's charge IC runs a USB-PD negotiation check on the first accepted charge cycle after a new cell is fitted. Until that cycle completes, the device may fall back to standard 5W charging and ignore higher-wattage adapters. Plug in a USB-PD charger and let it complete one uninterrupted charge from low to 100%. After that first full cycle, USB-PD negotiation re-establishes and fast charging becomes available again.

My iPad Air 2 shows 80% battery but then dies without warning — is the new cell bad?

The cell itself is not the problem. The iPad's fuel gauge IC was calibrated to your old battery's voltage curve, and the new cell drops voltage at a different point under load — particularly when the display and WiFi are running together. The gauge reads that drop as a sudden cutoff rather than a gradual decline. Run one full discharge to automatic shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100%, and the gauge will remap against the new cell's curve.

The battery percentage on my iPad Air 2 is jumping around after I replaced the battery — it reads 60%, then suddenly 45%, then 70%.

Erratic percentage readings after a cell swap are caused by the fuel gauge IC using stored calibration data from the original battery. The new cell has a slightly different discharge curve, so the gauge misreads state-of-charge as it moves through voltage ranges it hasn't learned yet. One complete discharge-to-shutdown cycle followed by a full uninterrupted charge to 100% gives the IC a clean calibration reference. After that single cycle, the percentage display stabilises.

My iPad Air 2 feels warm while charging after fitting a new battery — should I be concerned?

Mild warmth during charging on a new cell is expected. The charge IC on the iPad runs at a slightly higher duty cycle on the first few charge cycles as it characterises the new cell's internal resistance and adjusts current delivery accordingly. We saw the same behaviour on the bench — surface temperature was within normal range and dropped after the first full cycle completed. If the device becomes hot to the touch or shows a temperature warning on screen, disconnect immediately and check that the battery connector is fully seated.
