Why the TX201LA BIOS flags a new battery as poor health immediately after swap

The TX201LA reads EEPROM data embedded in the old battery cell to track health history. When a new cell goes in, the BIOS has no prior cycle data and defaults to a poor-health or unknown status. This is a data gap, not a fault with the replacement cell. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate then an uninterrupted charge to 100% gives the fuel gauge IC enough data to update the health register and clear that warning.

Windows reads the Wh figure stored in the battery's EEPROM, not from live measurement. The value in EEPROM may differ from the actual chemistry rating of a replacement cell. This is a reporting artefact — the cell is still delivering its rated 18.38Wh capacity. After two or three full calibration cycles, some firmware revisions update the displayed figure to match actual measured output. If the figure persists, verify the reading against actual charge behavior rather than treating the displayed number as accurate.

The TX201LA tablet fuel gauge is jumping around wildly — showing 60%, then 30%, then 80% within minutes. What's going on?

The fuel gauge IC is calibrating itself against the new cell's discharge curve, and it doesn't have enough data yet to report accurately. This erratic behaviour is normal for the first two to three full cycles after a cell swap. Run the tablet down to hibernate cutoff twice, charging fully to 100% each time without interruption. By the third cycle the gauge IC has enough reference points to lock onto stable readings.

The TX201LA tablet shuts off abruptly while the screen shows around 20–25% battery remaining.

This is a voltage cliff issue. The new cell's voltage drops faster than the fuel gauge expects under the combined load of the display and processor, hitting the BMS cutoff voltage before the percentage counter reaches zero. The displayed percentage and the actual cell voltage have fallen out of sync. Run two full discharge cycles to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% each time — this lets the fuel gauge IC re-learn the cell's actual discharge curve at load.

Charging stopped at 80% and won't go higher. The tablet has been on charge for hours.

This is controlled by Asus battery health charging firmware, not a fault with the replacement cell. The TX201LA's BIOS includes a charge limit setting that caps charging at 80% to reduce long-term cell stress — it ships enabled on some units. Go to the Asus Battery Health Charging utility in Windows, set the mode to Full Capacity, and the charge ceiling will lift to 100%.
