Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Dell Latitude 5290 / 12 5285 2-in-1 — 7.6V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (J0PGR)

This is a 7.6V 5200mAh lithium-polymer battery replacing OEM part J0PGR across the Dell Latitude 5285 and 5290 series, including the N003L7390-C-D1606FTCN and N012L7390-C-D1706FTCN configurations. It fits the slim 2-in-1 and clamshell chassis variants that share the same connector and BMS handshake protocol. Capacity is 39.52Wh — matching the original specification exactly.

  • Latitude 5285 / 5290 platform fit: These models share the same 7.6V power rail, physical connector, and Dell EC communication protocol — which is why one cell covers both the 2-in-1 and standard Latitude 5290 chassis without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge-discharge cycle on a Latitude 5290. The BMS handshook with the EC on first boot, charge current ramped normally, and the protection circuit triggered at the correct low-voltage cutoff without nuisance tripping.
  • Post-install learn cycle on Dell EC: After installing, run a full discharge until the laptop hibernates, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the Dell battery learn cycle in the EC and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap — it is not a fault with the new cell.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor after replacement

The Dell EC reads cycle count, charge history, and design capacity from EEPROM data stored on the old cell. When a new cell installs, that EEPROM data is either absent or zeroed, and the EC flags it as degraded before any charge history exists. This is a firmware behaviour, not a battery fault. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% — the EC writes a new baseline and the health warning clears on the next boot.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% shown on the fuel gauge

The fuel gauge IC calibrates its state-of-charge model against the old cell's impedance curve. A new cell has lower internal resistance, so the IC underestimates how much voltage will drop under combined CPU and display load — it reaches the hardware cutoff voltage before the percentage hits zero. The fix is two to three full discharge-charge cycles, which let the fuel gauge IC build an accurate model against the new cell's actual curve. After calibration, shutdowns at false percentages stop. Target 7.6V at rest and 6.8V minimum under load as your check values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell BIOS shows the new battery as "Unknown" or 0% right after I installed it — is the cell dead?

No — the Dell EC reads battery identity from EEPROM data on the cell, and a replacement cell has no prior charge history for the EC to reference. The EC defaults to "Unknown" or 0% until it records its own baseline. Run a full discharge until the laptop hibernates, then charge uninterrupted to 100%, and the EC will register the new cell correctly on the next boot.

The battery Wh rating showing in Dell Power Manager doesn't match what the listing says — why?

Dell Power Manager pulls Wh data from the EEPROM field on the cell, which reflects the rated chemistry value written at manufacture. The actual delivered Wh depends on real-world load and temperature, so the number in software can differ slightly from the label spec. This is a reporting difference, not a capacity defect. Check the figure again after two full charge-discharge cycles — it will stabilise closer to 39.52Wh as the fuel gauge IC calibrates against the new cell.

My Latitude 5290 won't charge past 80% since I put this battery in — what's wrong?

Nothing is wrong with the battery. Dell's firmware includes a BIOS-controlled charge limit that caps charging at 80% when "Custom Charge" or "Primarily AC" mode is active in Dell Power Manager or the BIOS battery settings. Open Dell Power Manager, go to Battery, select "Primarily Battery" or set the charge limit to 100%, and the cell will charge fully. This setting persists across reboots, so confirm it is saved before assuming a hardware fault.
