Fits Gardena R40, R50, R70, R80 robotic mower; replaces OEM part 586 57 62-02 and 589 58 61-01.
18.5V 1500mAh Li-ion cell delivers 27.75Wh; sufficient capacity for typical weekly mowing cycles on residential lawns.
Battery slides into the mower's charging dock with a keyed connector; locking tab engages automatically when seated.
We tested the BMS on blade motor inrush under thick grass; the protection circuit held stable through full discharge cycles.
Before first spring use, bring the pack indoors overnight if stored below 10°C — cold cells have higher resistance and can trip the BMS when the blade motor draws peak current on startup.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Gardena R40 / R80 Series — 18.5V Li-ion Replacement Battery (586 57 62-02)

This 18.5V Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in Gardena robotic lawn mowers including the R40, R50, R70, and R80. Capacity is 1500mAh (27.75Wh), matching the stock specification. It fits the same battery bay and connector as the factory unit.

  • R40–R80 platform fit: These four mower models share the same 18.5V power rail, identical battery bay dimensions, and the same BMS handshake protocol. One battery design covers the full range because Gardena kept the electrical architecture consistent across this robotic series.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through simulated blade-motor inrush loads at 18.5V. The BMS held the connection without nuisance trips on normal start cycles. Cell voltage stayed balanced across all three groups throughout discharge.
  • Seasonal storage tip: Before returning the mower to service after winter, bring the battery indoors overnight if temperatures are below 10°C. Cold Li-ion cells carry higher internal resistance, and the blade motor's inrush current on a cold pack can trip the BMS on the first start of the season.

Charger showing fault after the mower sat in the garage all winter

Gardena robotic mower batteries self-discharge slowly over winter. If the pack drops below approximately 2.5V per cell, the charger's acceptance circuit rejects it as a safety measure and shows a fault LED instead of beginning a charge cycle. This is a voltage threshold issue, not a faulty charger or dead battery. Some chargers include a trickle recovery mode — leave the pack connected for 30–60 minutes and check whether the fault clears once cells recover above the acceptance threshold.

Mower cuts out mid-row then resumes after a short pause

This pattern points to thermal protection triggering in the BMS, not a defective battery. Thick grass or wet conditions increase blade drag, which raises current draw and generates heat inside the pack faster than normal. The BMS disconnects the output to protect the cells, then re-enables once temperature drops. Allow a 5-minute cooldown, then resume — if cut-outs happen repeatedly on the same lawn section, check that the mowing schedule avoids peak midday heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Gardena R40 battery gets noticeably warm during the first few charges with a new pack — is something wrong?

This is normal cell conditioning behaviour for the first 3 to 5 cycles. New Li-ion cells have slightly elevated internal resistance until the electrolyte fully wets the electrode surfaces, which generates more heat than a broken-in pack. Surface temperature should stay well below 40°C — if the pack is hot to the touch or the charger cuts off early, that's a different problem. Run 3 full charge cycles and heat generation during charging should reduce noticeably.

The mower loses power and slows down when it hits a thick or wet patch of grass, but recovers once it moves to a lighter section — what's happening?

Heavy grass load spikes the blade motor's current draw sharply. If that current exceeds the BMS's continuous output threshold, the pack clamps output voltage to protect the cells, causing the mower to slow or stall temporarily. This is voltage sag under high draw, not a faulty battery. Keep the mowing schedule frequent enough that grass stays short — the R40's blade motor is sized for regular maintenance cuts, not recovery cuts on overgrown lawns.

After the first spring startup, the mower finishes its run earlier than expected even though the battery shows a full charge — is the new pack faulty?

Low ambient temperature is the most likely cause. Li-ion cells deliver measurably less usable capacity below 10°C because ion mobility through the electrolyte slows down, reducing effective Wh output without any fault in the pack. This isn't a defect — it's a physical property of Li-ion chemistry. Charge the battery indoors at room temperature and install it in the mower just before the scheduled run to recover close to the rated 27.75Wh output.
