Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Gardena Robotic R160 2013–2015 — 18V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is an 18V 3000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Gardena Robotic R160 robotic lawn mower, covering the 2013, 2014, and 2015 model years. It powers both the blade motor and the onboard navigation system. Capacity is 54Wh, matching the original specification.
- R160 2013–2015 compatibility: All three model years use the same 18V battery housing, connector pinout, and charge communication protocol. The BMS handshake across this range is identical, so one battery covers all three without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge on an R160 mower. The BMS accepted the charge handshake on first contact, and the blade motor drew current normally through start, run, and stop phases.
- Seasonal storage tip: Ni-MH cells self-discharge faster than Li-ion during long storage. If the mower sits unused from autumn through spring, run a full charge cycle before reinstalling the battery — a pack sitting at low voltage for months may need two full cycles before it reaches rated capacity.
Charger showing fault after the R160 sat in the garage all winter
Ni-MH batteries self-discharge at roughly 1–2% per day at room temperature, and faster in cold garages. After several months of storage, a pack can drop below the charger's minimum acceptance voltage. The Gardena docking charger reads this as a fault condition and refuses to begin a charge cycle. To recover the pack, apply a slow trickle charge using a compatible Ni-MH charger set to a low rate — this brings the cell voltage back into the range the dock will accept, usually within 30–60 minutes of trickle input.
Mower cuts out mid-row then restarts on its own after a short pause
This is thermal protection activating inside the battery. Thick grass or wet conditions force the blade motor to draw sustained high current, which heats the cells. Once internal temperature hits the BMS threshold, it disconnects the pack to protect the cells. The mower appears to recover because the BMS resets once temperature drops. Let the unit sit for five minutes before resuming — if cutouts repeat on every run, check that the blade is sharp, as a dull blade multiplies the current draw significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions
My R160 keeps cutting out after a few minutes in longer grass — is the battery faulty?
Not necessarily faulty — this is the battery's thermal protection tripping under high blade-motor load. Thick or wet grass forces sustained current draw that heats the Ni-MH cells, and the BMS disconnects the pack once it hits its temperature limit. Let the mower rest for five minutes and the BMS will reset automatically. If it trips repeatedly on every mowing cycle, check blade sharpness first — a worn blade can double the current draw compared to a sharp one.
My R160 is noticeably slower and cuts for a shorter stretch on the first run of spring — what's happening?
Ni-MH cells lose charge capacity when they sit at low state-of-charge over winter, and cold cells also have higher internal resistance at startup. Both effects reduce available power on that first spring run. Run two full charge-and-discharge cycles before measuring performance — capacity typically returns to rated levels after the cells have been properly reconditioned. If the pack was stored completely flat, bring it indoors overnight before charging, as cell temperature below 10°C slows the charge acceptance rate.
The new battery feels noticeably warmer than the old one after a mowing cycle — should I be concerned?
Warmth during the first several cycles is normal for a new Ni-MH pack undergoing cell conditioning. Fresh cells have slightly higher internal resistance until the electrode surfaces stabilise, which generates more heat per cycle than a broken-in pack. Check the temperature by touch after a full cycle — warm is fine, hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold is not. If the pack is running uncomfortably hot after five or more full cycles, check that the battery bay vents on the R160 are clear of grass clippings before ruling out a cell fault.
