Fits Garmin Forerunner 205, 305, and 305i GPS watches; replaces OEM part 361-00026-00.
3.7V, 700mAh lithium-ion cell delivers rated capacity for full workout tracking and satellite navigation on this running watch.
Connector seats vertically into the battery slot with a single locking tab; orientation is keyed and does not reverse-fit.
We bench-tested this cell in a Forerunner 205 unit; BMS accepted the new pack without fault codes on first power-up.
After fitting this cell, power the watch fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire satellite fix before logging workouts — GPS performs a cold start after power interruption that takes 5–10 minutes versus under a minute for warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Forerunner 205/305 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (361-00026-00)

This is a 3.7V, 700mAh Li-ion cell for the Garmin Forerunner 205, Forerunner 305, and Forerunner 305i GPS running watches. It replaces OEM part number 361-00026-00. Fit this battery when the original cell no longer holds a charge or causes unexpected shutoffs during a run.

  • Forerunner 205, 305, and 305i compatibility: All three watches share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS voltage thresholds — 38.90 × 34.25 × 5.50mm with a matching 3.7V charging curve. One cell covers the full 200/300-series lineup.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the Forerunner platform. The BMS accepted the cell without fault flags, charge termination triggered correctly at the top of the 3.7V nominal curve, and low-voltage cutoff engaged cleanly before cell damage threshold.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after swap: After fitting this cell, power the watch on outdoors and let it acquire a full satellite fix before your first run. A full power interruption clears the GPS almanac cache, so the receiver runs a cold start — allow 5–10 minutes for that first fix. Subsequent warm starts take under a minute.

Why the Forerunner 205/305 shuts off without warning at low battery

The Forerunner's battery indicator is calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve. After years of cycle aging, or after fitting a new cell, the indicator and the actual voltage threshold can fall out of sync. The watch may show one or two bars remaining, then cut power when the cell hits the hardware low-voltage cutoff — typically around 3.0V. To recalibrate the indicator, run the watch through two full charge and discharge cycles after fitting the new cell. The displayed level will track actual capacity more accurately from the third cycle onward.

GPS accuracy dropping as the Forerunner battery runs low

The Forerunner 205/305 GPS receiver draws consistently while a satellite fix is active, but the watch firmware reduces receiver sensitivity at low supply voltage to protect the cell from hard cutoff. That sensitivity reduction narrows the number of satellites the receiver can track, which degrades positional accuracy — pace and distance data become less consistent. This is not a fault with the replacement cell; it is firmware behaviour triggered below roughly 3.2V. Keeping the cell charged above that threshold, especially on long runs, prevents the sensitivity reduction from activating.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Forerunner 305 lost all my saved courses after I replaced the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The Forerunner 305 holds courses and history in memory that depends on continuous power. When the cell is removed, that memory loses its backup voltage and some or all stored data is wiped. Before swapping the battery, connect the watch to Garmin Connect or Garmin Training Center and sync all courses and history to your computer. Re-import them after the new cell is fitted and the watch is back on.

After fitting this battery, the Forerunner 205 took over eight minutes to find a GPS signal — is something wrong with the cell?

Nothing is wrong. Removing the battery clears the GPS almanac — the satellite position data the receiver uses for a fast lock. Without that data, the receiver runs a cold start and has to download a fresh almanac from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes in open sky. Once the almanac is rebuilt and stored, every subsequent fix will lock in under a minute. Stand outside with a clear view of the sky for that first acquisition and let it complete before starting a workout.

My Forerunner 305 drains noticeably faster when I use the map screen during a run than when it's in the background — why?

The GPS receiver and the backlit display together are the two largest current draws in the watch. With the map screen active and backlight on, current draw is significantly higher than with the display off or dimmed between glances. The 700mAh cell is the same capacity as the original spec — the faster drain is not a cell defect. Set the backlight timeout to 8 seconds or shorter in the display settings, and use the map screen only when you need it rather than leaving it active continuously.
