Fits Garmin Nuvi 285, Nuvi 285W, and Nuvi 285WT GPS navigators, replacing OEM part ED26ED2985878.
3.7V, 1250mAh Li-Polymer cell delivers 4.63Wh total energy for full navigation cycles on this portable automotive unit.
Connector sits flush into the battery slot with no locking tab — seat it until you feel contact resistance.
We bench-tested this cell in a Nuvi 285 GPS unit; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion with no fault codes.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire satellite fix before navigation — cold start after power interruption takes five to ten minutes versus under one minute for warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Nuvi 285 / 285W / 285WT — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (ED26ED2985878)

This 3.7V, 1250mAh Li-Polymer cell replaces the factory battery in the Garmin Nuvi 285, 285W, and 285WT portable automotive GPS navigators. It matches the original's physical footprint at 60.00 × 36.50 × 5.00mm, so it seats correctly in the battery bay without modification. Capacity figure is taken directly from product data — 4.63Wh total energy.

  • Nuvi 285 / 285W / 285WT battery compatibility: All three variants share the same internal battery bay dimensions, connector orientation, and 3.7V supply rail. The 285W adds a widescreen display; the 285WT adds traffic reception — neither change affects the battery specification or fit.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the Nuvi 285 platform and monitored BMS behaviour through low-voltage approach. The protection circuit triggered cleanly at the correct cutoff threshold with no premature shutdown or erratic voltage reporting.
  • First satellite fix after battery swap: After full power removal, the Nuvi 285 loses its assisted GPS cache and performs a cold start. Power the unit on outdoors with a clear view of sky and allow 5–10 minutes for the first satellite fix — subsequent warm starts will lock in under a minute once the almanac rebuilds.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the Nuvi 285

As cell voltage drops toward the lower end of the 3.7V nominal range, some Nuvi units reduce GPS receiver power draw to extend operation. This shows up as slower position updates or minor positional drift — not a mapping error. The receiver is running at reduced sensitivity, not failing. A freshly charged cell restores full receiver power and normal fix accuracy.

Nuvi 285 shutting off without a low-battery warning

After a battery swap, the Nuvi 285's fuel gauge needs a full charge-to-discharge cycle to calibrate its voltage-threshold indicator. Until that cycle completes, the displayed battery icon may show two bars when the cell voltage is already near cutoff. The BMS then trips the protection circuit and the unit shuts off without the expected on-screen warning. Run one complete charge cycle — charge to 100% on the device, then use it until it powers down — to realign the indicator to actual cell voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Nuvi 285 shut off mid-route with no warning after fitting the new battery — what happened?

The Nuvi 285's battery indicator calibrates against cell voltage history, and that data resets when the battery is replaced. Until one full charge-to-discharge cycle completes, the unit can misread remaining capacity and shut off at the voltage cutoff threshold without displaying a low-battery warning first. Run a full cycle — charge to 100%, then use the device until it powers down — and the indicator will track correctly from that point forward.

My saved routes and favourites disappeared after swapping the battery — can they be recovered?

Some Nuvi 285 user data — including saved favourites and recent destinations — is held in battery-backed volatile memory. A full power interruption during a battery swap can flush that data. Saved routes stored to internal flash are usually retained, but RAM-held POIs and recent history may be lost. Check your Garmin account or any prior exports to myGarmin; if you backed up via Garmin's trip planner, the data can be re-synced over USB.

The GPS is taking much longer to find a signal than it used to — is this the battery or the unit?

A slow first fix after a battery replacement is a cold-start condition, not a fault with the battery or receiver. With power fully removed, the Nuvi 285 loses its stored satellite almanac and ephemeris data, so it has to rebuild position from scratch. Take the unit outside with a clear view of sky and allow 5–10 minutes for the initial lock — once the almanac is cached, subsequent warm starts will fix in under a minute.
