Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage. If the cell drops below approximately 2.5V, the BMS enters a protection lockout and the phone shows no signs of life — no charge indicator, no boot. The charge IC will trickle current into the cell until it clears the BMS recovery threshold, typically around 2.9V, at which point normal charging resumes.
