A new Li-Polymer cell has a slightly different voltage-versus-capacity curve compared to the aged cell the fuel gauge IC was trained on. One full slow discharge down to auto-off, followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%, resets the coulomb counter and corrects the curve mapping.

The fuel gauge IC stores a learned discharge model in non-volatile memory — that model reflects the old cell's internal resistance and capacity, not the new one. Until the IC collects enough data from the replacement cell, it interpolates badly and percentage readouts jump or stall. This is not a fault with the cell itself. Run two full charge-discharge cycles without interruption and the percentage display stabilises around the 3.7V nominal midpoint.
