Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Magellan RoadMate 1700 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (2793801J3)

This is a 3.7V Li-ion 750mAh replacement cell for the Magellan RoadMate 1700 portable GPS navigator. It fits the internal battery slot directly and restores power to the unit when the original cell can no longer hold a usable charge. Rated at 2.78Wh, it matches the voltage and capacity spec of the factory-fitted battery.

  • RoadMate 1700 fit: This cell matches the voltage rail and physical footprint the RoadMate 1700 requires. The connector and BMS communication line align with what the unit expects — the device charges and reads battery state normally after installation.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the RoadMate 1700 platform. The BMS negotiated correctly, the charge indicator tracked accurately, and the unit did not flag any battery fault.
  • Cold-start behaviour after fitting: After fitting this cell, power the GPS on outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before use. A full power interruption forces a cold start — first fix typically takes 5–10 minutes while the unit downloads fresh almanac data. Subsequent warm starts are much faster once that data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low charge on the RoadMate 1700

Some GPS units step down receiver sensitivity as voltage drops, trading position accuracy for power conservation. On the RoadMate 1700, this shows up as drifting position or slower route recalculation when the battery indicator reads low. A degraded original battery that sags under load accelerates this effect — the unit sees low voltage even when the indicator suggests charge remains. Replacing the cell eliminates the sag and restores full receiver performance.

RoadMate 1700 shuts off without showing a low-battery warning

This happens when the battery indicator is no longer calibrated to the actual cell's discharge curve. The device's voltage threshold for shutdown can be hit before the visual warning triggers — especially on an aged cell with a steep discharge curve at the tail end. The fix is to charge the replacement cell to full, then let the unit run through one complete discharge cycle so the firmware can re-anchor its voltage-to-percentage mapping. After that cycle, the low-battery alert reappears at the correct threshold — typically around 3.5V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My RoadMate 1700 took nearly 10 minutes to find a satellite fix after I put in the new battery — is something wrong with the GPS?

Nothing is wrong. Removing the battery cuts all power to the unit, including the memory that stores satellite almanac and ephemeris data. Without that cached data, the receiver has to download fresh positioning information from scratch — this is a cold start, and 5–10 minutes is normal. Once the unit completes that first fix and caches the data again, subsequent locks drop back to under a minute.

I lost my saved routes and some POIs after swapping the battery on my RoadMate 1700 — where did they go?

Some user data on the RoadMate 1700 is held in battery-backed RAM, which loses its contents the moment power is fully removed. Routes and POIs stored there — rather than written to internal flash — will not survive a complete battery swap. Going forward, use the Magellan Content Manager software to export and back up routes to your PC before any battery work, so a swap doesn't result in data loss again.

My RoadMate 1700 drains the battery much faster when I'm actively navigating than when it's just sitting on my desk — is the battery faulty?

The battery is working correctly. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver, the processor, and the display simultaneously — all at sustained load. On the RoadMate 1700, display brightness is the largest single draw; dropping screen brightness to the midpoint setting noticeably reduces total power consumption during a route. If drain still seems excessive, check that the device is not recalculating constantly due to a poor GPS signal, which keeps the receiver working harder than a clear-sky lock would require.
