Fits Micronix MSA338 and MSA358 survey instruments; replaces OEM part number MB-300.
4.8V, 4000mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers stable voltage throughout field measurement sessions without mid-task dropout.
Battery seats into the vertical pack slot with a single locking tab; connector orientation is keyed and cannot reverse-insert.
We ran full discharge cycles on the MSA338 platform — BMS accepted the cell cleanly, voltage held steady under sustained probe load.
After installation, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before field deployment; the MSA338 maps battery state during calibration and skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Micronix MSA338 / MSA358 — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (MB-300)

This is a 4.8V, 4000mAh Ni-MH battery for the Micronix MSA338 and MSA358 survey and measurement instruments. It replaces OEM part number MB-300 directly. Rated at 19.2Wh, it matches the original cell count and voltage rail these instruments require.

  • MSA338 and MSA358 compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and 4.8V operating rail. The BMS handshake is identical across the two, so one replacement pack covers either unit without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge runs on the MSA338 platform. The BMS handled sensor initialisation current spikes without tripping, and voltage held stable under sustained measurement loads.
  • Pre-deployment calibration cycle: After fitting a new pack, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before going into the field. The MSA338 maps battery state during that calibration pass — skipping it causes the low-battery indicator to trigger prematurely on your first measurement session.

MSA338 shutting down mid-measurement with no low-battery warning

The MSA338 draws a short current spike each time it powers a sensor or probe module. On a degraded or deeply discharged pack, that spike is enough to pull cell voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold momentarily — the instrument interprets this as a dead battery and shuts down. The display may not show a warning because the voltage drop happens faster than the indicator can update. A new pack with healthy internal resistance handles these spikes without the voltage sag that triggers cutoff.

Pack will not charge after the instrument sat unused for months

Ni-MH cells that sit at low voltage for an extended period can drop below the charger's detection threshold, causing the charger to reject the pack entirely. This is a BMS sleep state, not a dead battery. To recover, apply a slow trickle charge at 0.1C for 15–30 minutes to bring cell voltage above the 1.0V-per-cell recognition floor. Once the charger detects the pack, proceed with a normal charge cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The MSA338 resets mid-logging session and loses the data I was collecting — is this a battery issue?

Yes — this is a voltage dropout under sustained sensor load, not a firmware fault. When the instrument runs continuous measurements, current draw is higher than in standby, and a worn or partially discharged pack sags below the instrument's operating threshold. The reset is the instrument's response to an undervoltage event. Fit a fully charged pack and confirm resting voltage reads above 5.5V before starting a logging session.

My MSA338 powers on fine but shuts off immediately when I connect it to a PC for data transfer — why?

USB data transfer adds a second current draw on top of the instrument's normal operating load. If the pack is below about 50% charge, the combined draw pulls cell voltage low enough to trip the BMS cutoff. The fix is straightforward — charge the battery fully before any PC transfer session, not just to the point where the instrument powers on.

After fitting the new MB-300 pack, the battery percentage display jumps around and doesn't seem accurate — is the pack faulty?

The MSA338's voltage-threshold indicator recalibrates to the new cell's discharge curve, and this takes one full charge-discharge cycle to settle. On a brand-new pack, readings will appear inconsistent until the instrument has mapped the actual voltage range of the new cells. Run one complete calibration cycle through the instrument menu, then discharge and recharge fully — the percentage display stabilises after that cycle.
