A new cell has a discharge curve the fuel gauge IC has never seen. When the phone pulls high current — LTE modem, screen at full brightness, camera — the terminal voltage can sag below the BMS cutoff threshold even though the reported state-of-charge says 25%. The BMS shuts the output rail immediately to protect the cell. This is not a defective battery; it is the IC working from a stale lookup table. Run one full discharge to the automatic shutdown point, then charge uninterrupted to 100%, and the IC remaps its voltage-to-percentage curve against the new cell.
Phone will not power on after the BV-5QW sat in storage
Li-ion cells in storage self-discharge slowly. If the cell voltage drops below approximately 2.5V per cell, the BMS enters lockout mode and blocks all output to prevent further damage. The phone sees no voltage on the battery rail and will not respond to the power button. Connect the phone to a wall charger — not a USB port — and leave it untouched for 20 to 40 minutes. The charge IC trickle-charges the cell above the BMS reactivation threshold, typically around 2.9V, at which point the BMS reopens the output and the phone will boot normally.

Why does my Lumia 929 show a different battery percentage after I put in the new BV-5QW?

Run one full discharge to automatic shutdown and one uninterrupted charge to 100% without fast charging enabled. After that single cycle the IC recalibrates, and percentage accuracy returns to normal.
Fast charging stopped working after I replaced the battery on my Lumia 930 — why?
On the first cycle after a cell swap, the charge IC can reject the high-current fast-charge handshake because the BMS on the new cell reports an internal state the IC treats as a safety hold. This is a one-cycle behaviour. Let the phone complete one full charge at standard current using a basic 5V charger, not a fast-charge adapter. After that charge completes, plug in the fast-charge adapter and the handshake should accept normally.
My Lumia 929 feels warm near the battery while charging the new cell — is something wrong?
A new high-impedance cell generates more heat during the first few charge cycles than a broken-in cell does. The charge IC pushes current into higher internal resistance, and that resistance converts some energy to heat. Surface warmth during charging is normal for the first two to three cycles and drops as the cell's impedance decreases. If the phone becomes hot to the touch — uncomfortable to hold — remove it from the charger and check that the charge voltage is not exceeding 5V at the port.
