This is a 15.2V, 5200mAh (79.04Wh) lithium-polymer replacement battery carrying OEM part number BTY-M6L. It fits the MSI GS65, GS65 Stealth Thin, GS65 Stealth Thin 9RE-051US, and P65 series notebooks. The cell matches the original voltage rail and connector so the battery drops into the existing bay without modification.

  • GS65 and P65 platform fit: Both chassis share the same BTY-M6L connector pinout, 15.2V four-cell configuration, and BMS communication protocol. That shared architecture is why a single cell covers the full model range without adapter cables or firmware workarounds.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on a GS65 unit, monitoring BMS handshake, cell balancing across all four cells, and cutoff behaviour at low state-of-charge. The pack reached rated capacity and the BMS reported no faults.
  • Post-install calibration on the GS65: After fitting this battery, run one full discharge to the hibernate cutoff point, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning the firmware throws after every cell swap.

Why the GS65 BIOS flags a new BTY-M6L as poor health

The GS65 firmware stores battery health data in EEPROM on the original cell. When a new pack installs, that EEPROM data no longer matches the physical cell, and the BIOS reads the mismatch as degradation. This is a data-sync issue, not a fault with the replacement. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate then a complete uninterrupted charge gives the firmware a full dataset from the new cell and rewrites the health status. After one or two learn cycles, the BIOS health indicator returns to normal.

GS65 shutting down at 20–30% shown on the fuel gauge

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's discharge curve. The IC is still using voltage thresholds mapped to the old, degraded cell, so it hits the cutoff trigger well before the new cell is actually depleted. The fix is the same learn cycle — discharge fully to hibernate, recharge to 100%, and repeat once more. After two complete cycles the gauge IC recalibrates and the remaining-charge percentage tracks accurately down to the real low-voltage cutoff near 12.0V.

The BIOS is reading stale EEPROM data from the previous cell and has not yet accepted the new pack as valid. Shut the laptop down completely, unplug the charger, hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual charge from the board, then reconnect the charger and power on. If the reading persists, run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% — this forces the firmware to write fresh data from the new cell.

Windows is reporting this BTY-M6L as 79.04Wh in Device Manager but the battery details page shows a different design capacity — which one is correct?

The 79.04Wh figure from the product data is the rated capacity of this cell. What Windows sometimes displays as "design capacity" pulls from the EEPROM value written by the original factory cell, which may differ if the old pack was already degraded when its data was last written. After one complete discharge-to-hibernate and full recharge cycle, the EEPROM updates with real data from the new cell and the figures align. Trust the 79.04Wh rated value — the Device Manager discrepancy is a data-sync artefact, not a capacity defect.

The GS65 charge stops at exactly 80% and won't go higher — is this a fault with the replacement cell?

No — this is the MSI Battery Master charge limit feature active in the EC firmware, not a fault with the BTY-M6L cell itself. MSI ships many GS65 units with an 80% charge ceiling enabled to reduce long-term cell stress during AC-tethered gaming. Open MSI Dragon Center (or MSI Center), go to Battery section, and switch the charge mode from "Best for Battery" to "Best for Mobility" to allow charging to 100%.
