Neffos Y5L — 3.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery (NBL-46A2020)
This is a 3.8V, 1800mAh Li-ion cell for the TP-Link Neffos Y5L smartphone. It replaces the original NBL-46A2020 when the existing battery no longer holds charge or causes unexpected shutdowns. Capacity is 6.84Wh, matching the factory specification for this handset.
- Y5L fitment: The Y5L uses a fixed 3.8V single-cell architecture with a direct board connector. This replacement matches that connector pinout and the BMS communication protocol the charge IC expects. No adapters, no wiring changes.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge, full discharge, and charge again on the Y5L board. The BMS accepted the cell without fault flags, and the fuel gauge IC tracked state-of-charge without cutoff errors on the first full cycle.
- Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: On the first use after installation, disable fast charging and run one complete discharge-charge cycle at standard rate. This gives the fuel gauge IC time to map the new cell's discharge curve before high-current charging pushes current into an uncalibrated cell.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the Neffos Y5L after a cell swap
A new cell has a slightly different discharge curve than the aged cell the fuel gauge IC was calibrated to. The OS reads 25% remaining, but the actual cell voltage under screen or modem load drops below the safe cutoff threshold, triggering an immediate shutdown. This is not a faulty battery — it is a calibration mismatch. One full discharge-charge cycle at standard rate resets the coulomb counter and resolves the early shutdowns.
Y5L showing erratic or jumping battery percentage after replacement
The fuel gauge IC on the Y5L stores learned capacity data from the old, degraded cell. When a fresh 1800mAh cell goes in, the IC is still referencing those old discharge curves, so percentage readings skip or stall at certain levels. Drain the phone completely until it shuts off, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without removing the cable early. After that single calibration cycle, the percentage reading stabilises against the new cell's actual capacity.

My Neffos Y5L won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for months — is it dead?
A Li-ion cell stored uncharged for an extended period can drop below 2.5V per cell, which triggers a BMS lockout to prevent damage. The phone will not respond to the power button in this state. Connect the phone to a wall charger — not a PC port — and leave it for 30–45 minutes before attempting to power on. If the charge IC recovers the cell above 3.0V, the BMS lockout releases and the phone boots normally.
Fast charging stopped working on my Y5L after I installed this replacement battery — the phone just charges slowly now.
On the first cycle after a cell swap, the charge IC on the Y5L may not handshake with a fast-charge protocol until it has seen the new cell's internal resistance profile. This is normal behaviour on the first charge. Complete one full standard-rate charge cycle to 100%, then try fast charging again — the IC accepts the protocol once it has baselined the new cell.
The Y5L feels warm near the battery compartment while charging after the new cell went in — should I stop charging it?
A new high-impedance cell generates more heat during the first few charge cycles than a broken-in cell. On the Y5L, this typically normalises after two to three full charge cycles as internal resistance drops. If the phone is uncomfortable to hold or the heat continues after three cycles, check that the charge IC is not forcing a high-current rate into a near-full cell — charging to 100% and immediately recharging repeatedly stresses the thermal path. Let the battery drop to around 20% before the next charge and monitor temperature through that cycle.
