Why the N97 Mini reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap

Nokia's fuel gauge IC builds its capacity model by tracking coulombs in and out over time. When you swap the physical cell, the IC still holds the discharge curve of the old, degraded battery. The new cell has a different impedance profile, so the percentage readout drifts — often showing full well into discharge or dropping suddenly near 30%. One complete discharge-to-shutdown, followed by an uninterrupted full charge, resets the learned curve to the new cell.

This is a voltage cliff, not a capacity fault. Under modem transmission or peak display brightness, current draw spikes and cell voltage dips below the BMS cutoff threshold before the fuel gauge reaches zero. It happens most often in the first few cycles when the coulomb counter is still uncalibrated to the new cell. Run two full discharge-charge cycles and the shutdowns typically stop. If they persist past three cycles, check that the battery contacts on the phone chassis are clean and making firm contact — corroded pins add resistance and worsen voltage sag under load.

My Nokia N8 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months — is it dead?

Probably not. A BL-4D cell left uncharged in storage can drop below 2.5V, which triggers BMS lockout to prevent cell damage. Plug the phone into a wall charger — not a USB port — and leave it for 30 to 45 minutes without pressing the power button. The charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell until voltage climbs above the BMS recovery threshold, typically around 3.0V, before the phone will respond.

The percentage on my E5 jumps from 60% straight to 15% and then back up — what's causing that?

The fuel gauge IC is still recalibrating against the new cell's discharge curve. It learned the old battery's impedance over many cycles, and the new cell behaves differently under load. Run the phone from a full charge down to automatic shutdown, then charge it to 100% in one uninterrupted session. Repeat once more if the jumping continues — two full reference cycles are usually enough for the counter to stabilise.

Fast charging stopped working on my Nokia N97 Mini right after I fitted this battery — is the charger faulty?

The charger is likely fine. On the first cycle with a new BL-4D cell, the charge IC sometimes falls back to standard charge rate because it hasn't yet confirmed the cell's internal resistance profile. This is normal behaviour — fast charge typically re-engages on the second or third cycle once the BMS has logged enough charge data to approve higher current. Charge normally for two full cycles, then test fast charging again.
