This happens when the phone's display or modem draws a brief high-current spike and the cell cannot sustain voltage through it — the battery hits a voltage cliff before the percentage gauge catches up. Likely not dead — it is a BMS lockout. If the cell discharged below 2.5V during storage, the protection circuit cuts output entirely to prevent damage. Plug the phone into a wall charger (not a PC USB port) and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button. The charge IC trickle-charges the cell back above the BMS recovery threshold, typically around 2.8–3.0V, at which point the phone will power on normally.
The phone gets noticeably warm near the battery compartment while charging the new cell — is the charge IC damaging it?
A new Li-Polymer cell with a slightly higher internal impedance than a broken-in cell draws more charge IC regulation, which generates more heat during the first few cycles. This is normal and reduces after two or three full cycles as the cell's impedance settles. If the phone stays warm past cycle three, check that nothing is obstructing the back cover — a gap at the battery door traps heat against the charge IC.
