Fits Radio Shack model 23-282 cordless phone handset, replaces original 3.6V Ni-MH battery.
3.6V and 250mAh capacity delivers standard talk and standby time for this handset; voltage matches base station charge acceptance threshold.
Cylindrical cell slides into handset battery compartment with flat contact points; no locking tab, seats fully when pressed home.
We bench-tested this cell in a 23-282 handset and confirmed BMS voltage ramp on first charge; standby draw measured normal across 72 hours.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require a slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-282 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 250mAh Ni-MH battery for the Radio Shack cordless phone model 23-282. It replaces the original handset battery when talk time drops off or the handset stops holding a charge. Dimensions are 50.03 x 25.78 x 17.99mm — verify yours before ordering.

  • 23-282 handset fit: The 23-282 runs a 3.6V three-cell Ni-MH pack. This battery matches that voltage rail and physical footprint. The contacts align to the handset bay — no modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a Ni-MH compatible charger. The BMS held voltage through standard load draw and the cell temperature stayed within spec across all cycles.
  • First charge after install: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. Ni-MH cells in phone batteries arrive partially discharged from storage. A slow first charge lets the cells balance and reach rated capacity.

Talk time shorter than the original battery after replacement

New Ni-MH cells don't deliver rated capacity straight out of the box. The chemistry needs three to five full charge-discharge cycles before the cells reach their 250mAh ceiling. After the first charge, expect shorter talk time — that's normal, not a fault. By cycle four or five, capacity stabilises and you'll see the full rated performance.

Base station shows no charge or error light after battery swap

Ni-MH batteries drop to a low resting voltage during storage — sometimes low enough that the base station's charge circuit won't accept them. The base reads the incoming voltage, and if it falls below the acceptance threshold, charging won't start. Remove the handset, wait 30 seconds, then reseat it firmly. If the error persists, check that the handset contacts are clean and making full contact with the base cradle pins.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack 23-282 handset lost pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix that?

Some DECT cordless phones lose their pairing data when power is fully removed from the handset. The phone treats a dead battery as a full power loss and clears the link. Re-pair the handset manually using the registration button on the base — on most Radio Shack DECT models, hold the base page/find button for five seconds until the handset enters registration mode, then follow the on-screen prompt.

The battery drains overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what's causing that?

If the handset isn't fully and squarely seated in the cradle, the base won't deliver a trickle charge and the handset runs on battery the whole time. Lift the handset out and reseat it so the contacts click firmly against the base pins. Check the cradle contacts for dust or oxidation — a quick wipe with a dry cloth restores conductivity. A fully seated handset in a working base should hold charge overnight without drawing down the pack.

The 23-282 loses range near the edges of the house after the battery swap — is the new battery the problem?

Yes, range can drop when the Ni-MH pack hasn't fully conditioned yet. The handset's transmit circuit draws a brief high current during RF bursts, and a partially conditioned Ni-MH cell sags in voltage under that load. Lower transmit voltage means weaker signal at range. Run three to five full charge-discharge cycles and the cell's internal resistance drops — voltage sag under RF load reduces and range returns to normal.
