Fits Radio Shack model 23-966 cordless phone handset, replaces OEM part P103, HHR-P103, HHR-P103A.
3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers the voltage and capacity this DECT base requires to maintain pairing and transmit range during call.
Connector slides into vertical slot on handset battery compartment; locking tab seats flush against spring contact on base charging cradle.
We bench-tested this cell in a 23-966 handset on a standard Radio Shack charging base — BMS accepted voltage immediately, no fault light, stable discharge curve under standby load.
Place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require slow first charge to reach rated capacity on this platform.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-966 / 43-9004 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (P103)

This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for Radio Shack cordless phone handsets. It fits the 23-966, 43-9004, 43-9015, and 43-9016 models, among others. Cross-references include HHR-P103, HHR-P103A, TYPE 25, and OEM part 89-1324-00-00.

  • Multi-model fit across the 43-9000 platform: These handsets share the same 3.6V three-cell NiMH pack format, identical connector pinout, and matching physical footprint — 47mm × 32mm × 11.5mm. Swapping between models in this family carries no electrical risk as long as voltage matches.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a 43-series handset. The base station accepted the battery without error, the BMS balanced all three cells correctly, and voltage held steady at 3.6V nominal through the full discharge curve.
  • First charge on NiMH handset packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it there for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells shipped in partial charge state need a slow, uninterrupted first cycle to reach rated capacity — skipping this shortens talk time across all subsequent cycles.

Range dropping after a battery swap on DECT handsets

DECT transmit power draws sharp current bursts — up to several hundred milliamps — each time the handset pings the base. A NiMH pack that hasn't completed its first conditioning cycle has higher internal resistance than a fully formed pack. That resistance causes voltage to sag under RF load, which reduces transmit power and shrinks range. After three to five full charge-discharge cycles, internal resistance drops and range returns to normal.

Base station shows no charge light or error after installing a new pack

NiMH batteries self-discharge during storage and can arrive below the voltage threshold the base station uses to detect a valid pack — typically around 3.0V for a 3-cell NiMH. If the base shows no charging light or flashes an error immediately after install, the pack voltage may be too low for the base to accept a trickle charge. Place the handset firmly in the base, wait 10 minutes, then remove and reseat it. If the error clears, the base has accepted the pack and charging has started — check for a steady charge indicator at 3.6V after 16 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack cordless phone talk time is much shorter than expected after putting in the new battery — is it faulty?

Almost certainly not. NiMH packs require three to five full charge-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity — the first cycle typically delivers only 60–70% of the 700mAh rating. Leave the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge, use it until it cuts off, then charge again without interruption. By cycle five, talk time should be at or near full rated capacity.

The handset lost its pairing with the base station after I replaced the battery — how do I get it back?

Removing a cordless phone battery cuts all power to the handset, and some DECT phones store pairing data in volatile memory — it clears when power is lost. Re-register the handset using the base station's page or registration button, following the pairing sequence in the 23-966 or 43-9000 series manual. Once re-paired, the handset should reconnect to the base within 30 seconds.

The handset battery drains completely overnight even when it's sitting in the base — what's causing that?

This points to a seating issue, not the battery itself. If the handset contacts don't make a clean connection with the base charging pins, the base cannot trickle-charge the pack and the handset's standby draw depletes it. Remove the handset, check the charging contacts on both the handset and base for corrosion or debris, then reseat firmly — you should hear or feel a click. After reseating, verify the charge indicator light is solid within one minute.
