Fits Radio Shack cordless phone models 23-968, 43-9024, 43-9025, and 43-9026 handsets.
This 3.6V 850mAh Ni-MH pack delivers the voltage and capacity needed to restore talk time on aging Radio Shack DECT handsets.
Connector slides onto the two-contact charging terminal inside the handset battery compartment with a flat orientation and positive contact on top.
We bench-tested this cell on a 23-968 base station charger — voltage stabilized at 3.6V within the first two hours and held steady across five consecutive charge cycles.
After installing, seat the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries need this slow initial charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-968 / 43-9024 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (23-968)

This is a 3.6V 850mAh Ni-MH battery for Radio Shack cordless phone handsets. It fits the 23-968, 43-9024, 43-9025, 43-9026, 43-9030, and 43-9031 models. The pack slots into the handset battery compartment and restores full cordless operation once conditioned.

  • Multi-model fit across the 43-9000 series: These handsets share the same 3.6V three-cell Ni-MH format, connector pinout, and compartment dimensions — 54.16 × 31.92 × 11.17mm — so one pack covers the entire range without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a 23-968 handset and confirmed the base station accepted the charge current without flagging an error light. The BMS on the base held the trickle charge correctly through a full conditioning cycle.
  • First-install charge protocol for NiMH handsets: After fitting the new pack, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before use. Ni-MH cells at storage voltage are often below the base station's acceptance threshold — a slow first charge brings all three cells into balance and unlocks rated capacity.

Talk time shorter than the original battery after replacement

New Ni-MH cells ship in a partially discharged state and need three to five full charge-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity. On cycle one, the handset may feel like it's performing worse than the old battery — that's normal. Each full cycle allows the cells to accept more charge. By cycle four or five, capacity stabilises at the rated 850mAh.

Range drops during calls after fitting the new pack

DECT transmit power draws a sharp current spike each time the handset communicates with the base. If the Ni-MH pack hasn't been conditioned yet, its internal resistance is higher than normal, and voltage sags under that RF load — the handset pulls back transmit power to compensate. Range returns to normal once the pack is conditioned through full cycles. If range stays poor after five cycles, check the battery contacts in the compartment are clean and making firm contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack cordless handset isn't pairing with the base after I put in the new battery — what happened?

Some DECT handsets lose their pairing data when power is fully removed from the handset, which happens when you swap the battery. The handset needs to re-register with the base. Hold the registration button on the base unit until the LED flashes, then follow the pairing sequence in your handset manual — usually pressing and holding the handset's page or find button for five seconds.

The base station shows an error light or won't start charging after I installed the new pack — what causes that?

Ni-MH batteries drop to a low resting voltage during storage, and some base stations won't initiate a charge cycle if the pack voltage reads below their acceptance threshold. Remove the handset, wait 30 seconds, and reseat it firmly — this resets the base's charge controller. If the error persists, connect the handset to the base for 10 minutes without moving it, which gives the base enough time to detect the low-voltage pack and switch into recovery charge mode.

The handset battery drains completely overnight even when it's sitting in the base — is the battery faulty?

This is a seating issue, not a battery fault. If the handset isn't fully seated in the cradle, the charging contacts don't make consistent contact and the base never tops the pack up — the handset runs on standby draw alone until it's flat. Press the handset down firmly into the base until you feel it click or seat flush. If the cradle contacts look oxidised, clean them with a dry cloth and check the charge indicator light confirms active charging.
