Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Riester 3.5V XL Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (10691)

This 3.7V, 2600mAh Li-ion battery replaces the OEM 10691 cell in Riester diagnostic instruments including the 3.5V XL, Led Li-Ion handles, C Handles, and 3.5 Ri Accu C Type Handle. These are handheld medical examination devices — otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes used in clinical settings for ear and eye inspection. Voltage and capacity match the original specification exactly.

  • C Handle and XL platform compatibility: These Riester handle variants share the same cylindrical cell format, 3.7V nominal voltage rail, and BMS connector pinout. One battery covers all listed models without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on Riester handle hardware. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, and the charge IC completed normally to full capacity within expected parameters.
  • Power-on self-test after installation: After fitting this battery, let the device complete its full startup self-test without switching it off. Medical device firmware runs a BMS verification sequence at power-on — interrupting it logs a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot cycle.

Charge indicator not reaching 100% on the first charge cycle

Riester handles use a conservative charge IC that applies a reduced current limit when it detects a new or unfamiliar cell. This is intentional — the IC performs a capacity verification pass before committing to a full charge. On the first cycle, the indicator may plateau at 90–95% before the session ends. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle and the IC recalibrates to the full 2600mAh capacity, after which the indicator reaches 100% normally.

Device alarms low battery immediately after a confirmed full charge

This happens when the device firmware compares resting cell voltage against a threshold calibrated to an aged OEM cell. A new Li-ion cell at full charge can sit slightly above the voltage curve the BMS expects, and some firmware versions misread this as an out-of-range value. Run one full charge-discharge cycle before clinical use — this allows the BMS to complete its learn cycle and align the state-of-charge estimate correctly. After that single cycle, the low-battery alarm clears and does not return.

Frequently Asked Questions

The device won't power on at all after the battery sat unused for several weeks — is the cell dead?

Likely not dead, but the cell has self-discharged below the BMS recovery threshold. Li-ion cells in storage drop to a voltage level where the BMS locks out power delivery as a protection measure. Place the battery in the Riester charger and leave it for a full charge cycle without interrupting — the charge IC applies a trickle recovery current first, then transitions to normal charging once the cell clears 3.0V. If the indicator shows activity within 30 minutes, the cell is recovering normally.

The device shuts off unexpectedly mid-examination even though the battery indicator showed adequate charge before use.

New Li-ion cells have higher internal resistance in the first 10 cycles, which causes a sharper voltage sag under the load the Riester handle draws during illumination. The BMS reads that sag as a low-voltage cutoff event and shuts the device down — even though the resting charge was sufficient. This resolves progressively as the cell beds in over the first 8–10 full cycles. Until then, treat charge levels below 30% as the functional cutoff point during clinical use.

The self-test is failing after the battery swap — the device flags a battery error on startup every time.

This is a BMS learn-cycle issue, not a faulty cell. The device firmware stores capacity and chemistry data from the previous cell, and a new cell triggers a mismatch flag until the BMS completes one full charge-discharge verification. Do not dismiss the error and continue use — instead, run one complete charge cycle to full, then discharge the device through normal operation until the low-battery warning appears, then recharge fully. After that single cycle, the self-test should pass clean on every subsequent boot.
