Why the Galaxy A3 2016 reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap

The Galaxy A3 2016 uses a coulomb-counter-based fuel gauge IC that builds its percentage model from the original cell's discharge curve. When a new cell goes in, that stored curve no longer matches the actual cell chemistry, so the reported percentage drifts. The IC needs at least one full discharge down to automatic shutdown and one full charge to 100% before it recalibrates. Until that cycle completes, readings can be off by 10–20%. After recalibration, percentage tracking stabilises and matches real cell state accurately.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell

This happens when the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the worn original cell, which had a flatter voltage curve than the new cell. Under modem or display load, the new cell's voltage drops sharply below 3.4V at what the OS thinks is 25% remaining — the BMS reads this as a low-voltage event and cuts power immediately. Run one full discharge cycle without interruption and let the phone shut down on its own. After a full recharge, the fuel gauge recalibrates to the new curve and the premature shutdowns stop.

My Galaxy A3 2016 won't turn on after the new battery sat in a drawer for a few months — is it dead?

Lithium-ion cells self-discharge in storage, and if this one dropped below roughly 2.5V, the BMS entered a lockout state to prevent damage. Connect the phone to a wall charger — not a PC USB port — and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing any buttons. The charge IC will trickle current into the cell until the BMS releases its lockout, after which the phone boots normally. If the screen shows nothing after 40 minutes on a known-good charger, check that the battery connector is fully seated.

Fast charging stopped working after I fitted the replacement battery — the phone just charges slowly now.

Samsung's Adaptive Fast Charging protocol requires the charge IC to handshake with the battery's BMS on the first cycle. On a new cell, this handshake sometimes fails or defaults to standard charging until the BMS has completed one full cycle. Charge the phone to 100% using the standard charger without interrupting it, then discharge normally to around 10% and charge again. Fast charging typically re-engages on the second or third cycle once the BMS registers as fully initialised.

The phone feels noticeably warm near the battery area for the first hour of charging with the new cell — is that normal?

A new, uncycled Li-ion cell has slightly higher internal impedance than a cell that has been through several charge cycles. The charge IC compensates by running at higher voltage, which generates more heat than usual during the first few sessions. This is a first-cycle characteristic, not a fault. After two or three full charge cycles, internal impedance drops and the warmth reduces to normal levels — if the phone stays hot past the third cycle, reseat the battery connector and confirm you are using the original Samsung charger.
