Sony Clie PEG-S300 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (LIS1161)

This is a 3.7V 850mAh Li-ion battery for the Sony Clie PEG-S300, PEG-S320, PEG-S360, and PEG-S500 series PDAs. It replaces part number LIS1161. These early 2000s Palm OS handhelds lose battery capacity quickly after years of storage, and this cell restores normal operation.

  • S300 / S320 / S360 / S500 platform fit: These four Clie models share the same LIS1161 cell, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol. The same voltage rail powers the Palm OS RAM, CPU, and backlight across all four, so one cell covers the full group without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a Clie S-series unit. The BMS accepted the charge curve without fault flags, held the 3.7V nominal rail steady during active use, and the OS reported battery level correctly throughout.
  • Sync before you swap: The Clie PEG-S300 stores contacts, calendar entries, and open application state in volatile RAM. That RAM is powered directly by the main battery. Do a full HotSync to your host computer before removing the old cell — anything not synced will be gone the moment power drops.

Why the Clie PEG-S300 loses saved data after a battery swap

Unlike flash-based devices, the PEG-S300 uses SRAM for main storage. SRAM is fast but requires constant power to hold its contents. The moment the battery is removed, anything stored there — contacts, memos, app data — is erased. There is no internal backup capacitor large enough to cover a full cell swap. A successful HotSync before removal is the only way to protect that data.

Clie PEG-S300 stuck on boot screen after fitting a new battery

A new cell ships at a partial state of charge — often below 3.5V. The PEG-S300 boot sequence draws a spike of current to initialise the display and RAM, and if the cell voltage is too low, the unit stalls or loops on the startup screen. Connect the device to its cradle or USB charger and charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on. Once the cell reaches approximately 3.6V, the boot sequence completes normally.

The fix for next time is a full HotSync to your desktop before removing the old battery. If you have Palm Desktop installed, reconnect the cradle now and sync immediately to restore from the last saved backup.

The Clie powers on after the new battery but resets itself randomly during use — what's causing it?

Random resets on a freshly fitted cell usually mean the battery has not yet reached a stable charge and the voltage is sagging under load. The PEG-S300's processor and backlight pull enough current to dip a partially charged cell below the BMS cutoff threshold, which triggers a hard reset. Charge the device fully before extended use — check that the charging LED extinguishes, which indicates the cell has reached 4.2V. If resets continue after a full charge cycle, check that the battery connector is seated flat with no lifting on the contact tabs.

My Clie PEG-S300 runs down much faster since I restored it — was the original battery better?

The original battery has likely degraded to a fraction of its rated capacity after 20-plus years, so the comparison feels off even with a new cell. However, the PEG-S300's backlight draws significantly more current than standby, and if backlight timeout settings were reset during the swap, the screen may be staying on longer than before. Go to Preferences → General and set screen auto-off to 30 seconds. That single change has the largest impact on discharge rate on this hardware.
