Fits SpectraLink 8742 cordless phone handsets; replaces OEM battery BBK87120.
3.7V, 2200mAh lithium-ion cell delivers 8.14Wh to restore talk time on this DECT handset after original pack loses capacity.
Connector slides into handset battery slot with single locking tab; orientation keyed to prevent reverse insertion.
We bench-tested this cell in a SpectraLink 8742 base charger — BMS accepted charge within two cycles and voltage held steady under standby draw.
On first install, seat the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge; SpectraLink lithium packs need extended initial charge to calibrate fuel gauge.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

SpectraLink 8742 / PBL87420 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BBK87120)

This is a 3.7V, 2200mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the SpectraLink 8742 cordless handset. It fits the 8742, PBL87420, PBL87440, and Pivot 8741 series handsets that run on the BBK87120 pack. Swap it in when the original no longer holds a charge through a standard shift.

  • 8742 / PBL87420 / Pivot 8741 platform fit: These handsets share the same 3.7V single-cell architecture, BBK87120 connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — one battery pack covers the entire platform.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a SpectraLink 8742 handset. The BMS accepted charge from a standard base station without error flags, and cell voltage held steady across the discharge curve under normal DECT transmit load.
  • First-charge protocol for Li-ion handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and charge uninterrupted until the charge indicator clears. SpectraLink bases use a trickle-top phase — interrupting it early leaves the cell at 90–95% and skews the handset's fuel gauge from day one.

Talk time shorter than expected after battery swap

A new Li-ion cell ships at partial state of charge — typically 40–60%. The handset's onboard fuel gauge calibrates against the first few full charge-discharge cycles, so early talk time will read low. Run three full cycles: charge to completion, use until the low-battery warning triggers, then recharge fully. By cycle three, the gauge aligns with the cell's actual 2200mAh capacity and reported talk time stabilises.

Handset loses DECT pairing after battery replacement

Removing the battery cuts power completely to the handset's registration memory on some SpectraLink 8700-series units. When power is restored with the new pack, the handset boots without a stored base station pairing. Go to the handset menu under System or Registration, select your base station, and re-enter the system PIN — the default is typically 0000. If the base still rejects the handset, power-cycle the base station before attempting re-registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SpectraLink 8742 shows a charging error on the base after I put the new battery in — what's wrong?

A Li-ion cell shipped from storage sits at reduced voltage, sometimes below the threshold the SpectraLink base uses to confirm a valid pack is seated. The base reads that low voltage as a fault rather than a dischargeable cell. Remove the handset, wait 10 seconds, and reseat it firmly — the base should then begin a pre-charge trickle to bring the cell up to acceptance voltage, after which normal charging resumes. If the error persists, check that the battery contacts on the handset and the pack are clean and making full contact.

The handset works fine on a call but drops signal or breaks up more than it used to — could the battery cause that?

Yes. DECT transmit power draws a short current spike each time the handset bursts a signal to the base. If the battery's internal resistance is elevated — common in a cell that hasn't completed its first full charge cycle — voltage sags under that RF load and the handset reduces transmit power to compensate. Run the handset through two complete charge cycles and retest range. If drop-outs persist only at the edge of the coverage area, the issue is environmental rather than the battery.

The 8742 battery drains overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — is the new pack faulty?

The base charges through the handset's contacts, so if the handset isn't fully seated, it draws from the battery rather than the base supply. Lift the handset out and press it back down until you feel or hear it click into the cradle — a partial seat is the most common cause of overnight drain. If the handset is fully seated and drain continues, check that the base station power adapter is supplying voltage by confirming the base charge indicator LED is active. A dead adapter looks identical to a draining battery.
