Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

SpectraLink 8742 / Pivot 8741 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BBK87120)
This is a 3.7V, 2400mAh Li-ion replacement for the original BBK87120 battery. It fits the SpectraLink 8742 handset and related models in the PBL874xx family, including the Pivot 8741. Install it when the original pack no longer holds a charge or the handset shuts off mid-call.
- 8742 and PBL874xx family fit: These handsets share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and 3.7V supply rail. The BBK87120 footprint — 95.70 × 57.80 × 7.80 mm — seats correctly in all listed models without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a SpectraLink 8742 unit. The BMS accepted the charge from the base station cradle without fault, and voltage held stable under the RF transmit load the handset pulls during active calls.
- First-charge protocol for Li-ion cordless handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base cradle for an uninterrupted full charge before the first call. Storage discharge means this cell may arrive below 3.4V — the handset firmware will flag low battery and cut off early if you skip this step.
Talk time shorter than expected after fitting the BBK87120
A new Li-ion cell shipped from storage has not been fully cycled, so the first one or two charge cycles will deliver less than rated capacity. This is a chemistry condition, not a fault. The battery management circuit in the 8742 calibrates its fuel gauge against actual charge delivered — early cycles look short until the BMS has a full charge history. Run two to three complete charge and discharge cycles from the base cradle and capacity will stabilise near the rated 2400mAh.
Base station charge light not activating after battery swap
If the cradle LED stays dark or shows a fault light after you seat the handset, the battery voltage is likely below the base station's acceptance threshold — typically under 3.0V after extended storage. The base charges circuit expects a minimum cell voltage before it opens the charge path. Connect the handset to a USB power source or a compatible standalone charger briefly to push the cell above 3.2V, then return it to the cradle. Once above threshold, the base will recognise the pack and begin its normal charge cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions
My SpectraLink 8742 handset lost its DECT pairing after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back on the system?
Removing the battery completely drops the handset's volatile memory, which can erase its DECT registration on some SpectraLink firmware versions. The handset needs to re-register with the base station or DECT controller from scratch. Go into the handset menu under Settings > Registration, or hold the Talk and End keys simultaneously for 5 seconds to trigger re-pairing mode — exact steps depend on your PBX firmware version. Once re-registered, the handset will resume normal operation on your system.
The 8742 handset drains overnight even when it's sitting in the base cradle — is the new battery faulty?
This is almost always a seating issue, not a cell fault. The charging contacts on the 8742 cradle are spring-loaded and need firm, level contact to pass current — if the handset is even slightly tilted, the cradle does not charge. Remove the handset, clean the gold charging contacts on both the handset base and the cradle with a dry cloth, then reseat it firmly until you hear or feel it click into position. Confirm the cradle LED activates within 10 seconds of seating.
The handset signal drops and calls cut out near the edge of our office — could the new battery be causing the range problem?
Yes — voltage sag under RF transmit load is a real cause of reduced range. The 8742 transmit circuit draws a short current spike each time the handset sends a DECT burst; if the battery voltage drops below approximately 3.5V under that load, the radio output power reduces. This is more likely to happen with a new cell that has not completed its first full charge cycle. Fully charge the battery in the base cradle, run one complete discharge cycle by using the handset normally until it powers off, then recharge fully — this lets the BMS establish accurate voltage tracking under load.
