Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Standard Horizon HX270S / HX370S / HX600S — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (FNB-V57)
This is a 7.2V, 1800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Standard Horizon HX270S, HX370S, HX500S, and HX600S handheld marine VHF radios. It replaces OEM part numbers FNB-V57, FNB-V57H, FNB-64, FNB-64H, FNB-83, and FNB-83H. It fits the original battery compartment and connects via the same contact arrangement as the factory pack.
- HX270S / HX370S / HX500S / HX600S compatibility: These four models share the same 7.2V two-cell Ni-MH pack format, connector pitch, and BMS handshake threshold. One battery covers all four radios on this platform.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and transmit cycles on the HX270S dock. The BMS accepted charge on first insertion without fault. Voltage held steady under simulated PTT draw without tripping overcurrent cutoff.
- Marine VHF contact maintenance: Salt air accelerates corrosion on the battery contact strip. Before first use, wipe the gold contacts on both the battery and dock with a dry cloth. A corroded contact can prevent the dock from reading the pack correctly and trigger a fault state before charging begins.
Why the HX270S drops to reduced TX power mid-call on a fresh Ni-MH pack
Ni-MH cells at storage voltage sit around 1.2V per cell at rest but sag under the transmit current spike — which on a 5W VHF radio can exceed 1.5A. If the pack hasn't completed a full charge cycle, cell voltage under load can dip below the radio's low-voltage TX threshold, triggering an automatic power reduction. This isn't a fault with the battery. Run a complete charge cycle before the first transmit session and the sag narrows significantly.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after inserting new pack
The HX270S uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator, not a capacity-measuring circuit. A new Ni-MH pack ships at storage voltage — typically 7.0–7.2V — not at full charge. At that voltage, the radio displays one fewer bar than a fully charged pack at 8.4V. This is not a fault. Charge the pack fully in the OEM dock or a compatible Ni-MH charger and the bar indicator will read correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
My HX270S charger dock blinks a fault LED as soon as I insert the new battery — what's causing that?
The dock is rejecting the pack because the cell voltage is below the dock's acceptance threshold after shipping in storage state. Remove the battery, wipe both the pack and dock contact strips with a dry cloth, then reseat firmly. If the fault persists, the dock needs to see a clean contact cycle to initiate the BMS handshake — a single removal and firm reinsertion usually clears it and charging begins within 30 seconds.
The radio cuts out completely mid-transmission even though the battery was fully charged — is the BMS tripping?
Yes. The PTT transmit current spike on a 5W VHF radio can briefly exceed 1.5A, and if cell impedance is higher than expected — common in the first few charge cycles on a new Ni-MH pack — the BMS trips an overcurrent cutoff to protect the cells. The radio goes silent, then recovers within a few seconds. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles to condition the cells and reduce internal impedance; the overcurrent trips should stop after that.
The battery was sitting unused for several months and the dock won't charge it at all now — is it recoverable?
Extended storage can push Ni-MH cells below the dock's minimum recovery voltage, and the charger simply won't start a charge cycle on a pack it reads as dead. Try a Ni-MH charger that has a recovery or reconditioning mode — it applies a low-current trickle charge to bring cell voltage back above the acceptance threshold, typically around 6.0V, before switching to normal charge. If cell voltage recovers past that point and the dock accepts the pack, cycle it fully twice before relying on it for on-water use.
