Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell

This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old, degraded cell's discharge curve. When modem or screen load spikes current draw, the new cell's voltage drops faster than the IC expects — it reads a cliff it wasn't expecting and triggers an emergency shutdown. One full discharge-charge cycle without fast charging lets the coulomb counter reset its baseline. After that cycle, shutdowns at 20–30% typically stop.

OS reporting wrong battery percentage after cell swap

The A906's fuel gauge IC stores learned capacity data from the old cell. After fitting a new cell, that stored data no longer matches the actual discharge curve, so the percentage readout drifts — sometimes jumping 10–15 points under load. The fix is a full charge to 100%, then a complete drain to auto-shutoff, then a full charge again. After two full cycles, the IC recalibrates and percentage reporting stabilises.

My TCL A906 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in storage — is the new cell dead?

Almost certainly not. A cell stored at low charge can drop below 2.5V, which triggers BMS lockout — the battery disconnects itself to prevent damage and the phone shows nothing. Plug into a wall charger (not a PC USB port) and leave it for 20–30 minutes without attempting to power on. The charge IC will trickle-charge the cell back above the BMS re-enable threshold, typically around 3.0V, at which point the phone will boot normally.

Fast charging stopped working after I fitted the replacement — the phone just charges slowly now.

On the first cycle after a cell swap, the USB-PD handshake between the charger and the phone's charge IC can fall back to standard 5V charging while the BMS validates the new cell. This is normal. Complete one full charge at standard speed, then disconnect and reconnect your fast charger — the charge IC re-negotiates the protocol once it has confirmed the cell's impedance is within range.

The phone feels warm near the battery compartment while charging — is something wrong with the replacement cell?

A new high-impedance cell generates more heat during the first few charge cycles than a broken-in cell does. The charge IC is pushing current into a cell whose internal resistance hasn't settled yet, so mild warmth is expected. If the phone becomes hot to the touch or the charging LED flashes repeatedly, stop charging and check the connector seating. Normal warmth during the first two or three charges should reduce on its own as the cell's internal resistance drops with use.
