Fits Unitech emergency lighting units, OEM part number 0253799 replacement battery.
3.6V, 800mAh Ni-CD cell delivers 2.88Wh — sufficient capacity for full-duration backup illumination during mains failure on standard emergency exit fixtures.
Cylindrical Ni-CD format seats into the spring-loaded clip contact arrangement; polarity marked on the cell body, orientation locked by fixture geometry.
We bench-tested this cell on a Unitech charge controller at float voltage — BMS accepted the new pack within two charge cycles, no fault codes logged.
Perform a manual test cycle within 24 hours of installation by holding the test button for full rated duration — this confirms the cell accepts load and allows the charge controller to register new capacity before compliance audits.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Unitech 0253799 — 3.6V Ni-CD Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 800mAh Ni-CD cell built to replace part number 0253799 in Unitech emergency lighting units and exit signs. It restores the backup power function that keeps emergency lighting active during a mains failure. Dimensions are 52.10 x 27.00 x 26.60mm — confirm against your existing cell before ordering.

  • Emergency lighting fit: Unitech emergency lighting units run a continuous trickle charge circuit that expects a Ni-CD cell at this voltage and capacity. Swapping chemistry or voltage breaks the charge controller's float window, causing persistent fault indicators or no-charge states.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge cycle on the bench and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell voltage at float. The charge controller moved from charge mode to standby without triggering a fault output.
  • Post-installation test cycle: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This confirms the new cell accepts load and lets the charge controller register cell capacity before your next scheduled compliance test. A new cell pulled from storage may not deliver full rated capacity on its very first activation.

Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement

A Ni-CD cell shipped from storage carries a partial charge, not a full one. The charge controller in Unitech emergency fittings applies a trickle rate that can take 24 hours or more to bring a new cell to full capacity. Running a duration test immediately after installation means the cell cannot sustain load for the full rated period, and the fitting fails. Allow at least 24 hours on mains power before conducting any compliance duration test on a newly installed cell.

Fault LED not clearing after confirmed good installation

Some Unitech emergency fittings latch the fault LED in hardware and do not clear it automatically once a new cell is detected. The charge controller needs to see the cell voltage rise above the float acceptance threshold before it resets the fault output. If the LED stays on after 24 hours of charging, locate the reset point on the fitting's control board — typically a small recessed button or a momentary short across two labelled pads. After a manual reset, the indicator should move to green once the cell voltage holds steady above 3.6V under float.

Frequently Asked Questions

My emergency light dims and cuts out a few minutes into the duration test — is the new battery faulty?

The cell is almost certainly fine. A Ni-CD pulled from storage needs at least one full charge cycle before it can sustain load for the entire rated duration. The dimming you see is voltage sag from a partially charged cell, not a failed one. Leave the fitting on mains power for 24 hours, then run the test again.

The charge indicator has stayed red for two days since I fitted the new battery — what's wrong?

A new Ni-CD cell arrives with a resting voltage that can sit outside the charge controller's float acceptance window if it has been in storage for several months. The controller reads it as an unacceptable cell and holds the fault state. Disconnect the cell, leave it on a separate Ni-CD charger until it reaches approximately 4.2V (for a 3-cell pack), then reinstall — the controller should accept it and begin normal trickle charge.

The old battery in this fitting looked swollen and melted the cell holder — why does that happen?

Continuous trickle charge at elevated ambient temperature over several years causes electrolyte to gas inside a Ni-CD cell, building internal pressure until the casing deforms. Unitech emergency fittings are often installed in ceiling voids or above fluorescent gear trays where temperatures routinely exceed 40°C. Before fitting the new cell, check that the trickle charge voltage at the cell terminals does not exceed 1.45V per cell — a faulty charge controller running high is what degrades the next cell in the same way.
