Fits Velocitek Shift GPS navigator; replaces OEM part number VTK86.
3.7V 900mAh Li-Polymer cell delivers the voltage and capacity original to this handheld unit.
Connector type and slot orientation match the internal battery bay; no adapter required for installation.
We bench-tested this cell in a Shift unit; BMS accepted the charge cycle without error codes on initial power-up.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation use — GPS performs a cold start after power interruption that takes 5–10 minutes for first fix versus under a minute for subsequent warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Velocitek Shift — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (VTK86)

This is a 3.7V, 900mAh Li-Polymer cell for the Velocitek Shift handheld GPS navigator. The Shift is a sailing performance device that delivers real-time wind and speed data on the water. This battery replaces part number VTK86 and fits the Shift directly.

  • Velocitek Shift compatibility: The Shift uses a single Li-Polymer cell with a 3.7V nominal rail and a specific connector footprint. The onboard BMS communicates directly with this cell to manage charge termination and low-voltage cutoff. Any cell going into this slot must match both the voltage and the physical dimensions — 49.50 × 30.00 × 6.00mm — to seat correctly without stressing the flex connector.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the bench and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell without fault flags. Charge termination triggered correctly at full capacity, and the low-voltage cutoff fired at the expected threshold before the cell could be damaged.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after swap: After fitting this cell, power the Shift fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before heading out. The unit performs a cold start after full power removal — first fix can take 5–10 minutes, versus under a minute on a subsequent warm start. Let it complete that fix on solid ground.

GPS accuracy reduced when the Shift battery drops below half charge

Some GPS receivers scale back receiver sensitivity at lower battery voltages to reduce current draw. On a degraded or deeply discharged Li-Polymer cell, the voltage sag under load can push the Shift into this lower-power state even when the indicator still shows charge remaining. The result is slower position updates and reduced accuracy in heavy tree cover or at dock with obstructed sky view. Keeping the cell above 3.6V under load is the practical threshold where full receiver sensitivity stays active.

Shift shuts off without warning before the low-battery indicator appears

This happens when the battery gauge has drifted out of calibration — common after the original cell degrades significantly. The voltage-based shutoff threshold fires before the visual low-battery warning gets a chance to display. After fitting a new cell, run two full charge and discharge cycles to let the gauge recalibrate against the new cell's actual capacity curve. After those cycles, the warning indicator should reappear at the correct point, around 3.5V resting voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Shift lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The Shift stores some session data in battery-backed RAM, and a full power removal wipes it. Saved routes and marks held in volatile memory are lost the moment the cell comes out. Any data stored to the internal non-volatile memory before the swap should survive. Before pulling the battery next time, sync or export your routes via the Velocitek software so nothing is lost on the bench.

The Shift is draining much faster than usual during a race — what's happening?

Active GPS navigation draws significantly more current than standby. The GPS receiver is continuously polling satellites, and if the display is running at full brightness in direct sunlight, current draw spikes further. A 900mAh Li-Polymer cell at this draw rate will deplete faster than you'd expect from casual use. Turn display brightness down one step when readable, and confirm the cell is fully charged to 4.2V before going afloat.

Satellite lock is taking over five minutes after I fitted the new battery — something wrong?

Nothing is wrong. A full power interruption clears the GPS almanac and ephemeris data the Shift uses to find satellites quickly. Without that cached data, the unit must perform a cold start and rebuild its satellite map from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes outdoors with clear sky view. Subsequent power cycles reuse the cached data and lock in under a minute. Stand outside with an unobstructed sky view on first power-on and let it complete the full acquisition before use.
